Can anybody help me? Glucose in urine

Hello All,

Well after some long research online and talking with my endo, I still don't have the answer I am looking for. I am just over 30 weeks pregnant, and so far all is well. My blood pressure is normal, my sugars are doing really great (latest hgA1c was 6.6), I am not swollen, etc....I do however keep showing glucose in my urine. I have been going to the dr. since I became pregnant every two weeks, and everytime they make me pee on that urine stick, it shows my glucose is either 3 or 4+, which is the highest. They have never been worried about it, as I do not have ketones or protein showing and they always seem to make fun that I must of had a sugary meal before coming. Well yesterday, I put it to the test and had an absolute sugar-free breakfast, and when I went to the dr. it showed only 1+... I felt much better, but when I went and did it again at my next dr.'s appointment, which was an hour later, it showed 3+, and all I had was water. I am reallly concerned but my dr. seems to think that it will disappear after the pregnancy...has anyone has a similar thing happen to them, and if so, do you know what causes it? I have had type 1 diabetes for 21 tears and I am terrified that I have done damage to my kidneys, although I would think that would have shown up in all the blood tests my dr. has ordered in the past.

If anyone could help me, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks everyone,

Amanda

Every time your BG goes over your renal threshold you will spill glucose. It would be alarming in someone without diabetes, but honestly it’s probably not a big deal, and it doesn’t mean you’re not in good control… your renal threshold is sometimes lowered during pregnancy, so you might find that you are spilling sugar at levels that aren’t really all that high (like 140-160… normal is usually >180). If you aren’t wearing a CGM you may be missing those #'s, even if your fingerstick readings are much lower. If you are seeing #'s in those ranges, then there’s your answer.

This is not a sign of kidney damage, so please don’t worry

Hi John,

Thank you for your reply. In Canada, where I am from, they aim for a hgA1C of less than 7% if you are planning to be or are pregnant. I have been going to a high risk clinic to get my sugars down in order for me to become pregnant since July of 2009 and feel very well looked after. When I first started going to the clinic my hgA1c was at 8.2% so for me to be at 6.6% is an accomplishing feeling. I have had every possible urine and blood test there is since being pregnant, and I am currently seeing 4 doctors who all say I am doing a great job with my diabetes and pregnancy…I really do not feel the need to change doctors, I was just curious if anyone out there has experienced the same thing as me with the glucose in the urine. Andy by the way, I test my sugars 10-12 times a day

Thank you Sarah,

You have made me feel much better already, it is so nice to have people on here like you to share these things with!

John, it would be nice if you could reserve your opinions of a1c levels during pregnancy until you’ve actually EXPERIENCED a diabetic pregnancy.

Oh wait, you can’t.

My A1C’s were in that range for all 3 of my pregnancies (except for the scary few months where I clocked in with a 5.8 with my daughter) and I had 3 healthy babies, with no complications…

Hi Amanda,

Please disregard my earlier reply…I don’t know what mood I was in and looking at it now I see that it was not a nice reply and I should not have written it. Congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck to you!

Also, I plan to delete my 1st post and I would hope that you won’t mind…

I believe it’s normal for even non-diabetic women to spill a little sugar in your urine during pregnancy. Not sure why, but I don’t think you should worry. Does the urine test stick have other measures on it? I like if you were damaging your kidneys you would also have protein in your urine as well. Many of us on TU went through pregnancy completely undiagnosed and untreated and our babies are fine.

Focus your worry on how little sleep you’re going to get when your new arrival comes!

Thank you Kelly! I will definately use your advice on the focus of my sleeping, LOL! : )
