Next year on the 4 jan 2012 I have my quarterly glucose test, and imagine just after the Christmas and New Years holiday, my sugar will be shooting through the roof. My doctor will tell me off, and I would promise to do better next time. It's very hard for me to say no to sugary stuff. I am on insulin and I should really be very strict about my diet. My cravings getting worse. Now my monitor is not working, ooh I will be in trouble!!!
Drink lots of water and go for a walk if possible, helps keep sugars in control. Good luck! And have a Happy Christmas.
My A1C elevates slightly higher almost always after the Christmas and Thanksgiving season... I can almost also hear my doctor's endless sermons too. I agree with Pastel to drink more water...and exercise as much as you can. By doing that I have made my bg pretty much at bay :)
Merry Christmas!
Doctors should not scold when responding to a patient's elevated A1c's. They should act more like a coach, encouraging you to do better and possibly make some concrete suggestions as to how you can improve. Unfortunately, it takes an empathetic doctor to understand what the world looks like from the person with diabetes point of view. Better yet, wouldn't it be great to have a insulin-using doctor?
Thanks for the comments guys, good to know im not alone. I should drink more water and walk more. Sometimes my grandson keeps me on my toes, running after him, he's 15 mnths old and very active. My doctor gave me insulin a year ago, and sugar still goes up. Trouble is I just can't say no to sweets esp at Christmas time. Merry Christmas to all!

Technically, your A1C shouldn't elevate from December 25th to January 4th because Hemoglobin, where your A1C is taken from, holds your average glucose levels for 3 months. But, short term your levels will be higher. not sure Claire, if you're on a pump, pills, or shots, but giving a small bolus before eating helps the sugars from spiking and helps tremendously. Just a little tidbit from a fellow diabetic. :)
Oh really, Justin? So the average glucose level stays for 3 months. Which means if I be good and control my diet before Xmas, i will still have a good glucose level when I do a blood test on Jan 4. That's good to know. Thanks.
