Pumping: Christmas Heights

It is seriously scary to realize just how many carbs I ate on Christmas day (the final verdict is more than I normally eat in two and a half days). I just carelinked my pump data. Last year, I just ate and drew more insulin and injected and didn't add everything together at the end of the day. Ah well. It's a good thing it only happens once a year--we had pizza Christmas eve, and lasagna on the day, plus random cookies throughout.

But I've been having a good Christmas. My sister was in from Virginia with her family--a three year old girl and a year old boy, who is a serious Mama's boy. It took a day and a half before he let anyone besides Mama and Daddy even touch him, which Grandma (my Mama) found disturbing. He's at the age of separation anxiety, I guess.

Today, another sister and her husband came into town--we're having our big family thing on Sunday when everyone's here. I am anticipating better sugar levels than Christmas.

Who am I kidding.

I thought I had done so well when two hours after dinner I was back in the 130's, but then it was 10pm, and I was up in the 250s. I corrected, three times (no, I didn't override the bolus wizard, but I was seriously tempted). I woke up on Wednesday at 199.

I'm almost fully recovered at this point. I've been between 78-111 most of the day. My only real issue at this point is that I cut my thumb on broken glass, and it hurts to milk my fingers to warm them up so that I can take my blood sugar. sigh. I can't win.

Right now, in the kitchen, Dad (my dad, not my brother-in-law) is making cookies. I can smell them. I think my sugar level is rising just from the smell.

Happy Holidays . . .

Nice story! Good luck Sunday!

Yikes, pizza/ lasagna tag team! Good job keeping up with that! I was really working hard to keep up with the appetizer rounds, dinner worked ok, then a post-dinner crash---> = dessert so I had an ok time too!

One thing to remember is that the Bolus Wizard doesn’t allow you to change your insulin sensitivity factor based on how high you are. Most of us are more insulin resistant the higher we get so it takes more insulin to reduce our BG.

I know that you’re new to pumping so you’re wise to stick with the Bolus Wizard. But as you get more experienced, remember that it is just a recommendation.

I've only overridden once, and that was last night when I was correcting for a 57 (I've been logging treatment for lows) and it told me I needed insulin which I don't think I believe. On the other hand, this was only the second low I've had in the weeks since the pump, and I think I miscalculated the potatoes at dinner.

Personally, I'm comfortable--I'm ready to start adjusting on my own--little bits at a time. I'm tired of the fact that I've been within the high end of my range instead of the low end (of reasonable--I prefer to be at 85 rather than 115). I think my basal's set right, by my sensitivity factor could be edged just slightly.
