I started seeing an naturopath for some advice on improving my immune system and energy levels. I have Type 1 and hypothyroidism and he suggested I do a liver cleanse to ensure that my thyroid hormones are being converted properly (something about T4 to T3). He wants me to start an even stricter diet than I'm on as Type 1 -- no butter, eggs or dairy, geez! -- and to take laxative-like "liver cleansing pills."
Ok, I wasn't born yesterday, I know I should exercise caution when getting advice like this. But thought I'd ask --
Have any of you done a cleanse?
Do you think it's safe to take heavy laxatives when you're MDI?
Do you think it's necessary to restrict and already quite restrictive diet for the sake of a cleanse?
When you’re gone with your so called “liver clense”
Check you wallet…you will find it much lighter then when you started said “cleanse”. There is no scientic basis for that idea or any other so called cleanse. Pseudo science and pure snake oil.
Avoid fast food zealously, you will be far better off then wasting money on cleanses. And unless you have a constipation issue, what need would you have for laxatives period? Sounds like a baaaaaaad plan and more false science to me.
I don’t think the cleanse would be helpful either because thyroid conditions are caused by the thyroid gland(located in your throat)not producing proper amounts of hormones used to regulate your metabolism…Your liver is essentially a blood filter .I do not see how the liver being “cleansed” would help or change your thyroid condition.I agree with Stuart’s comments. Just take your thyroid meds.My mom has had hyperthyroidism and as she got older switched to hypo(not too sure how0.She has tried many natural ways to treat it over the years and no success. The one treatment of herbs a naturalist recommended to her made her teats come back appearing as though she did not have a thyroid condition. Her doc was confused and he asked her if she was taking any supplements. When she told him the combo of herbs she was taking, he said that the herbs she was on were only masking the condition.Which made sense since she had all the same symptoms and problems nothing physically changed.
The only test that’s regularly performed is TSH and it’s at like 2.3 right now. But when I look at all the symptoms of hypothyroid, all I have is some low energy. But I have two little boys and a full time job, so who knows.
Your body has a very efficient cleansing (detox) system of its own. People with hypothyroidism often feel tired, some put it down to the tablets they have to take. I would see your dr. about this and ask what he/she thinks.
