Cleansing

I’m looking for a good 1 or 2-day cleansing that I can do without screwing up my bloodsugars. Any advice? Fruits/veggies? Juice? Etc?

What are you trying to clean? I really don’t think fruits and juice are a good way of cleaning a diabetic.

Why don’t you consider a half day fast?

Dear Sag,
I’ve been in the medical field since 1947 and cleansings of one kind or another have come and gone and had a bad reputation the whole time. It’s not often one finds that the literature doesn’t change over the years.
I agree with bsc that a short fast for a meal or, in my opinion, lowering carbs, does all of us diabetics a lot of good.
Tell us what your goals are and maybe there are some alternatives that a type 1 can do that are even better!

this question is more in relation to cleaning out my intestines, haha, as embarassing as that is. i don’t want to use chemical laxatives. i was told that doing a quart of water mixed with 2 teaspoons of sea salt can help very much. i know the fruits and raw veggies help, but i wouldn’t want to do that for long because i DO need some form of carbs and protein in my diet to balance my current amount of insulin.

pysillium husk (metamucil) should be just fine (bulk/fibre) for a few days.
then keep on the high fibre fruit veg for a couple of weeks.
its the ‘fat’ from your large bowels that you want to move along., which can build up if you haven’t typically had enough fibre.

yoghurt is good to stabilise stomach bacteria (ie yoghurt is good every now and then for your tummy/digestion).

if you want to go over board, you can try some ‘prebiotics’ or lactobacili cultures (like yakult), both sold at supermarkets and health stores.

finally there are some caps you can take to get your liver stimulated - i think dandelion is a good one (the german naturapaths have used this one for a while)

I really knew what you were talking about. I’m sorry, I really don’t believe in those cleanse/detox methods. I think our intestines are naturally cleaning. If you took out your intestines and looked at them, you would probably be shocked at how little “build up” there is, they are always releasing self cleaning mucus. Do you ever have to scrub out your nose and sinuses? No, they are also self-cleaning.

What I might ask is why you feel you need to do this? Are you having digestive problems? If you are, then perhaps there are other things that can help. At times, I’ve found that probiotics have helped me restore a more normal digestion. Anyway, just some thoughts.

I agree with the extra fiber. Won’t affect blood sugars.

the colon can be ‘static’ for a long time, and as such, alot of things can be there for a while; typically fat and stools; and fibre as mentioned, is the most ideal to move things along.

yoghurt of course is good for the tummy, especially after a course of antibiotics which can knock off both the bad and ‘good’ bacteria; the yoghurt is conducive to re-establish the good bacteria
