I’ve noticed a strange thing here lately. I see threads that are several years old and people are still posting to it.
Then I see new threads where comments are “closed”
So it makes me wonder why something’s get closed.

That's a good question. I have wondered about it once in a blue moon, too. Maybe it's closed once there are no more responses for a period of time. Since I am able to go into the history of discussios and comment on them, maybe that's a factor. Anyway, if nobody comes up with an answer soon, you could write someone listed as being in administration along the right side od the site.

Sometimes people do a search on a topic, find something ancient and then post to a long inactive thread, essentially bringing it back from the dead. Threads can seldom closed. Either the original poster (OP) of the original thread or the admin team can close a thread. Threads are never closed automatically.
I get what you are saying Brian ...but if someone in Admin decides to close one's post it would be " nice" to inform the OP this is happening prior to and the when and the why included .It happened to me, a reasonable " long time member " ...it caused me grief as I asked another Admin " why " , who had given the " go ahead " to post ...not too computer savvy , I spent a lot of time re posting ...I am referring to my Team Diabetes event this past October in my home country the Netherlands !
Admin closes posts sometimes when discussions get "too heated".
(Sorry to hear of yours being closed Nel. I can't imagine why.)
Terrie ...glad you mentioned " why " !! maybe because I posted the link to my Team Diabetes fund raising page ??? ...I am assuming this was so , which I prefer not to do in my life , I do not usually " assume " ...I like to live by " facts " ...that's me !
I totally hate threads being closed. I hung out on a fantasy baseball message board where there were many heated discussions
but the mods still kept certain things on leashes. I am sorry that Nel's thread was closed and interfered with her experience and fund-raising as well. I detest the "cure diabetes with star fruit" or whatever sorts of charlatanism sometimes crops up but D-fundraisers should get a pass, particularly if they are from longstanding members like Nel. I guess there'd be a questions of the propriety about where do we draw the line between "longstanding members" but, at least from this account of it, it seems a bit heavy-handed. Diabetes is heavy enough on its own.
As a rule, the admin team will not discuss any actions taken in the public forum. The admin team will post approval notices and general warnings in threads, but any communication related to actions is done through private messages. There may be instances where actions are taken to close a discussion or blog due to comment activity and the original poster (OP) is not notified. I can understand your feelings on this. I'll take it as an action item to put forward the suggestion that the OP be notified of actions that affect their posting.
