For those who like the format here at TUDiabetes and are sad it’s shutting down, please come join us at FUDiabetes (For Unlimited Diabetics ) - it’s been around awhile and has lots of great information and discussion. Same format, and all types of diabetics are welcome!
I second that and, as a semi-active member of both, suggest that people who like the TUD forum as is and aren’t on FUD already might care to sign up “just in case”. The balance is slightly different too; basically the same, but different.
I meant simply that they feel different to me. I joined TUD in early 2018, the welcome message came from Cynthia Rogers-Celt and the Diabetes Hands Foundation. That alone felt “corporate” and the forum has a “bigger” and therefore less personal feel than FUD.
I joined FUD at the start of 2019 and the welcome message, combined with the account activation link, was, “Welcome to FUDiabetes!” FUD is smaller, the original founders are mostly still there and often active. It is much more personal; more like what many people refer to as, “A family.”
I’d add that there is no right answer, neither is better, just different. The UIs are also very similar although they see to use different features of Discourse so it’s easy to use the other.
Thanks for expanding your comment, @John_Bowler. With the user interface similar to TuD, I’m sure the environment will feel familiar to those who have not participated there before.
For me, having the ability to make longer comments and posts is important. So much of our culture tends to be shorter and punchier. Yet I know that there’s a persistent subset of people who like online content that provides more detail.
I plan on migrating to FUD. I first joined TuDiabetes around 2012(?) when there were changes to the JDRF forums that felt wrong to me. What made the transition easier was that many other posters made the transition around the same time. If enough of us make the move, FUD will feel more like home. In some ways it will be a reunion as FUD was originally started by TUD members who were dissatisfied with moderation or some other issue back in the day.
I’ve got the same photo and screen name over at FU. I don’t know that I have ever posted. I mostly go there when I haven’t seen one of you in a while and I worry you are dead. Usually someone has just gotten in a fight with an admin and so went over to FU.
If you make the move to FU, try to keep your same name and pic so we can identify one another.
@Terry4, it’s a lot of the same people as here. People generally start here, but then sometimes move over there. Some people are on both.
WTF??? I have been away for a bit due to health/life difficulties. I joined TuD when there were around 800 members or so. I became very fond of Manny and Andreina and was a Portland Ambassador for the site, as well as hosting a couple local meet ups of members. What happened?! I am hardly thrilled with the idea of joining a community who thinks a title like fudiabetes is appropriate. That is not a language I am fond of using in public and reeks of disrespect for the powerful nature of our common scourge and all the brave, delightful, hopeful ways we find to stay healthy and alive through it all. To me, it sounds like Denial–as in the stages of grief, Denial–as in this too shall pass–which it won’t, will it?……This is very disturbing. And very sad. Phooey.
Think what you want about the name (I didn’t come up with it) - but it’s a really sweet, supportive community. You are welcome to join but no one is forcing you to… it’s just an option.
It’s gonna be OK, Judith. It’s all the same community of users. You know people over there.
I actually never put the name thing together until I was writing about it yesterday. You will see a lot of word play as people transition. We had a user here named EL_VER who is a diabetic truck driver in California. He moved to fudiabetes. His user name because elver.
fudiabetes is where lots of good people go if they get in an argument with the admins. They have been inviting me to come over there for years. They don’t want to be separated from us. It’s all the same group of people that has been on these forums forever.
The community needs you. You can go to the other website option. See how you like it. Me and another woman were exploring it last night. I have some basic instructions here (you will need them): Transition
Try to keep your screen name and image the same. Here’s some screen name changes:
Thanks, my dear. I’ll try to learn more and consider it. And then see if I can get past the name, which I find offensive on so many levels……Fondly, Judith
I am making a thread showing us how we can access old TUD posts in the forum (using the wayback machine) so that everybody doesn’t feel so bad. It is here: Uplift our spirits - Type 1 & LADA - FUDiabetes
Yeah FUD is a good place. Online “communities” that feel real are hard to come by… and the format really does matter. I follow a lot of diabetes groups on Facebook and there’s absolutely zero sense of community, connection, support, or relatability on any of them… just drive by thoughtless comments from people who don’t really value any interaction with you.
