Hey fellow TuDiabetics!
Last night I managed to get myself a cut mid way down on my foot. It was slightly deep, but didn’t bleed? Which is curious. But what I’m hoping to get advice on was how you guys manage cuts on your feet? I know my Endo is always telling me to make sure my feet are in perfect condition and should treat any problems as serious as soon as they appear.I would appreciate some advice on this? For instance - should I avoid moisture? I usually put a band aid on with betadine…
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks Guys!
Kath
You were just recently diagnosed, so you don’t have the risks that some of our veterans have. Over time, your feet can have reduced circulation and feeling so an injury can be extremely hard to be aware of and heal properly. The circulation problem coupled with high blood sugars is really bad for infections. And as we get older we become less flexible (and more stupid) and we don’t look at our feet all the time, and if we can’t feel a wound we don’t know. Bad news.
But in your case, strict attention and wound care should be fine. Use an antibacterial, cover it with a bandaid and keep it in a good environment for healing (dry and out of the festering stuff). Look at it at least once or twice a day. Any sign of redness, swelling or pus and it is off to the doctor. Immediately. If the wound has not closed and shown signs of mostly healing within 2-3 days, then you should consider a visit to a doctor. But remember, any wound that you suspect requires stitching should be attended to withing 24 hours (don’t ask how I know this) (and yes I am that clumsy).
Super_sally is correct in the suggestion to use antibiotic ointment and keep an eye on it. I still seem to have ok circulation but had one incident, the first week I ran > 30 miles it was cold out so I wore two pairs of socks and they scrunched a toenail which turned black (not an uncommon running malady according to that literature…) but it also got pink so I went to convenient care and they commended my decision to come in, as did the podiatrist they recommended I follow up with. They rx’ed some sort of strong antibiotic.
