Hi Everyone- I've had Type 1 for over 20 years. I'm looking for some Young Adult Type 1s in the Dallas area that would be interested in meeting up as a support group- to have fun and talk with people who truly understand what we're going through. I haven't had much luck finding any current groups, but if you know of some please let me know!
Hi Sarai. I'm a long ways from Dallas but just want to let you know that I started a Type 1 Women's Group in the SF Bay Area with the support of JDRF. if you contact your local branch and tell them what you have in mind they will, hopefully help you get the word out. I've moved to a rural area about 5 hours away and miss my group like crazy. It's still going strong after about 2 1/2 years, meets once a month and we also have an active e-mail list where we sometimes post questions or let each other know about activities, studies, extra supplies, etc.
I live in the FW area, Sarai. I'm not sure if that's close enough, but I, too, have been looking at getting T1Ds together to hang out for fun and support! Message me anytime! - CJ
Thanks, Zoe! I've actually contacted JDRF and hopefully they will let me know about something. Surprisingly, there isn't a big Type 1 support system in Dallas. Maybe I will have to start one of my own!
I think even in the metropolitan areas, JDRF is slow to move towards adult services, stuck in the myth that Type 1 is "juvenile diabetes". That's why I also decided I needed to start my own. Everyone in the group said they'd searched in vain for a group solely oriented to Type 1 that wasn't just basic education for the newly diagnosed. Go for it! So many people will be happy if you do!
