Dealing with our dog Rocky who also has diabetes is stressful

Just dealing with his every day care is not too bad, but for the last 2-3 weeks he has not been eating much. He's lost over a pound and we've had him to the vet's 3 times in the space of a week and a half.

I find myself looking to comfort foods and I know it's because we are concerned and worried about him.

I am not writing this post in order to get you to read his blog, but if you are interested it's http://diabeticdogrocky.blogspot.com.

Our vet has ordered us some Fortiflora which besides being a probiotic is supposed to have a smell that encourages them to eat. Right now we are feeding him hamburger, and he's eating about half what he ate last week.

Any suggestions will be carefully considered.

Hi Ila, I'm happy to get news of Rocky. Last February our Golden Retriever, Aggie (then 13 y.o.), went on Phenobarbital for seizures. One side effect was a loss of appetite. A couple of shots of vitamin B12 helped--I really recommend this. She wanted chicken and turkey, so we fed her a lot of chicken and turkey. I didn't mind giving her high calorie foods with mostly empty calories (for a dog) to keep her weight up, such as potatoes and bread. She's doing much better now, eating three meals a day to get back to her best weight. She likes Merrick canned dog food and Natural Balance Venison and Sweet Potato biscuits very, very much, and is now back on kibble as well. The other two Goldens get some benefit from all this good stuuf, so they're happy campers!

We’ve had him to the vets three times in about a week and a half. He’s had two vitamin B12 shots and if they helped it was only temporary. He’s lost weight and there doesn’t appear to be any reason for it. If it weren’t for the diabetes, it wouldn’t be such a problem.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion.

If you want to continue giving B12 shots, you could ask your vet for a prescription for a vial and syringes. A whole lot cheaper. I have Pernicious Anemia and need a weekly shot of B12, so I really know! Best of luck with the little guy.

That certainly is something to think about. If I was sure they helped, I might do it. Right now we are waiting on the Fortiflora to see if it works. Hopefully we will get it tomorrow.
