Dexcom G4 failure/breakage/stopping?

Took my G4 out of my pocket a bit ago to see what the oracle would say, and found the unit very warm, and altogether unresponsive.

Went to plug it in, to see if I could get any response, and found that the female micro-USB port in the receiver is no longer fixed in position, but moving- shifting inside the case (i.e. its broken loose).

Last had it on the charger the night before last; no marking or indications that something had impacted the case, etc... just broken, internally.

Had last looked at it at dinner, a bit over 2 hours ago, and all was as I expected. Has been in my pocket, and I've done nothing remotely stressful since then... so...

I did not have a pleasant experience with Dexcom the last time I needed call them, and I've no doubt this will be my fault, but I did want to ask if there had been anything similar in other's experience? Any failures, breaks, etc.?

Ray~

Ray,

Sorry to hear that. My G4 is still in the box because I have two more of the Seven Plus sensors to use. My Seven Plus receiver has been extremely reliable for over three years.

Have you called Dexcom yet? Hopefully a new G4 is on its way to you.

Please updated us once you call Dexcom - hopefully they will just ship you a new one. I did read where one Tu member had problems with a broken key pad that came completely off and they sent him a new one.

I just started my G4 this week because I was using up my old Dex sensors. There are some things I really like more about the new model but there are some things not so much. I like the color screen and how thin the receiver is now, but I don't like the smaller arrow and the key pad - it seems harder to manipulate or maybe I'm just not used to it yet. I also don't like the taller transmitter - I like the flatter profile better.

I still wouldn't give my Dex up...my security blanket. Please let us know what happens. :)

I can report that I've had a positive experience with Dexcom in this instance, and that they are sending me a new receiver and sensor, which is scheduled to arrive tomorrow.

They required I put a credit card on file, which I didn't much care for, but understand if they are sending out the new receiver without first having the failed unit.

This was good, clean & straight-forward, unlike my previous experience, so I must at least be thankful for that.

Good to hear. Here's hoping the replacement will last longer.

Sue,

In comparison, I prefer the SevenPlus, honestly.

With the G4 I've yet to make it more than 4 days into a sensor without needing to tape it into place. The transmitter size contributes to this, what with its being higher and heavier. Now I tape the sensor on from the beginning, as I lost two sensors, early in their cycles, simply from rolling over in bed. Perhaps the increased size allowed the increase in range, but overall it feels a poor improvement.

The G4 is slower than the SevenPlus, which might seem negligible, but all the little bits stack up, and I don't really feel the improvements (standard USB interface, receiver size, color (?)) outweigh the detriments/irritations (lack of lanyard retainer, splash-screens, transmitter size, adhesion, speed, on-screen indicators, etc.).

It will be my third G4.

The first the belt-clip case failed, exceptionally, over the course of several hours, enduring nothing more than getting in and out of a car. This failure led to the receiver falling into a puddle, and immediately ceasing operations.

A similar occurrence with my first SevenPlus led me to crack the case, drill two holes for a lanyard, and I never had another issue. Yes, it undoubtably voided the warrantee, but I never lost it, it never fell in the water, our of my pocket, etc..

The G4 is not so easily opened a system as the Seven Plus, but I did find a completely safe and suitable way to put a lanyard on the G4. Here is a link to the information I found: http://www.tumblr.com/blog/dis-serif

Im glad you had a better experience than I did, Back when I was on the 7, they replaced my receiver for free under warrantee but then used the credit card they had, to go ahead and charge me for a whole new unit.
It took for ever to get it reversed too.The next year I got splashed by a pool and my receiver got wet not totally or submerged, I just dried it off and it was ok until the next day when it stopped working,
Dexcom told me I am out of luck even though I had time left on my warantee, Told me I have to buy a new one. I was getting a new MM pump at the time so I just switched to Mm sensors too. I liked my Dex better because I think it is more accurate but the fact that it is so easily broken is a deal breaker. I can swim with my Mm pump even though they tell you not to. and I generally don't. I did take it to a water park and it was totally fine.
Really though WHY CANT THEY MAKE THE DARN THING WATERPROOF AT THIS POINT !!!

I had the same issue with one of my Seven Plus units; got splashed from a falling glass in a restaurant, perhaps a tablespoonful or two- four hours later was generating an error code- water damage.

There is no legitimate reason they need be so sensitive to water, even aside from the connector. Cell phones I had a decade ago could fall in the lake, and if I took the battery out, let them dry out completely, they were fine; many similar examples.

So far as water-proof- look at dive computers; many of them can plug into a USB port for charging & download, and are at the same time water-tight to quite a few atmospheres.

But it was more important to have a color screen and colored case options than putting effort into making a more realistically durable product. The things seem more ludicrously sensitive to water than the Wicked Witch of the West.

Well I guess I'm no longer in a hurry to get the new sensors then. Wish I had known this sooner, I just got a new OmniPod PDM in anticipation of getting the new system. Maybe I should have got the MiniMed instead.

Well I have to differ here...no problems with the G4 and I've never had either the 7 or the 4 break. My 7 was wildly inaccurate and I love how accurate my new G4 is. Except for one thing and that is that I am unable to download my receiver. The software will not recognize the receiver and I've spoken to 4 people in the tech dept over the past 6 days in trying to resolve the issue. Aside from them being like any other tech dept in thinking the caller has no idea what they are doing (which I do) for the most part (3 out of 4) were very helpful and nice. Except they were unable to resolve the issue. I have one thing left to try and if that doesn't work, I'm really not sure what my options are. Has anyone else had this problem?
