G4 Dex USB Charging Port Broken

This is really a PSA, but I just wanted to report that the USB port on my G4 Dexcom came loose and shoved all the way into the device as I was plugging it in. Now, the port is just jiggling around in the device itself. I did call Dexcom and they are sending me a new receiver on Monday, so they are covering it. I know there have been some other complaints about the casing breaking very easily, and I do hope that Dexcom will continue to stand by their products and hopefully, work on improving their quality control. As much as I hated the shape/size of the egg, I used it without incident for over a year.

The sliding door to cover the usb port broke off of my first G4 receiver and Dexcom replaced it. The next receiver has a small crack in the same place but I can't be bothered to stay on the phone or get a call back if it does not effect the performance. The only problem I had was that I had downloaded the data from the first receiver to my computer and there is no way to integrate the data from the 2nd one.

I just got a replacement because the navigation wheel popped off.

Same here.

Our fist receiver was shipped without the final step of testing completed. It came up with a weird menu waiting for the manufacturer to input something. Dexcom replaced it. I wonder who the heck they got to build these things.

Hmmm, that's the second one I've read about.
And - my sliding door fell off also, haven't replaced it yet as they're saying if it looks like it's been dropped, I'll have to pay $199.

That seems like a value judgement Colleen, how can they say "it looks like it's been dropped" without any proof ? You just say you didn't drop it. They will send you another one, especially since this seems to be a problem with it.

If they open it up, it can be pretty easy to tell if it's been dropped. However, I agree with you. With the rampant build quality issues, they should just replace it.

the build quality of the case itself is not great, the data I get out of it is priceless. The second receiver they sent has held up relatively well except for a small chip in the door. But heck these parts are all plastic they're bound to break. List price of the receiver is $699.00 so they're giving Colleen a break only charging $ 199.00 (that was said completely in jest).

Ive had a wheel fall off and the usb door . 2 week old g4
covered in a different thread here with pictures
These posts help me realize its not just me. $1000 device + cheap plastic = unhappy doug

Nice - especially since they dont include a rubber bumper like the last version .... whats the chances that you have a device with you 24x7 for a year and you DONT drop it once

I don't know what the point of the sliding door is. I know the manual says to keep it closed when not charging the device but it's not like it makes it waterproof. I've never had a sliding door on any other micro usb port device like smart phones.

Exactly. Especially when you are 6 yrs old like our daughter. The egg has been dropped tons of times and it is still fine. Well - fine if you don't want the better data.

Good point. I wonder why they even have it?

The guide that keeps the G4's sliding door that covers the USB port in position has broken off TWICE. First time I called DexCom and they sent me a replacement G4. The guide on the replacement G4 broke almost off today (see photo); it looks like it'll break off completely next time anything touches it. I have no idea why: neither time was I playing with sliding the door. First time, I noticed it after disconnecting the G4 from the USB cable; this time I just took it out of my shirt pocket to check the reading and noticed it. I guess I'll call them again tomorrow and see what they say...

Reading thru the Dexcom discussions, I find that numerous people have had problems with the thing I call a "guide" -- which has frequently been called a "rail" -- breaking off. Since I'm going to call Dexcom tomorrow about this, I'm also going to demand that they issue a statement about the problem and what they suggest we should do if & when it breaks...

On my Dex 7+ I had tons of lint on the inside of the screen because it came in through the charging hole. My guess is that they are responding to that problem with the sliding cover.

I wondered about that, but I've never had that happen with my phone, so who knows?

That seems like a bad internal design. There's no reason for a micro usb port to not be air tight. With the 7+ I never had the lint problem because it came with a case that worked well for me. I would only unzip it to charge or download data. I mostly carry the G4 loose in my pocket.

Yeah - the 7+ receiver is horrible for getting stuff in it. We had a thread in there for awhile and now we have some weird piece of plastic or something hanging around in ours. So annoying. But that's what I was trying to say - there shouldn't be anything coming in through the connector on the new G4.
