Dexcom G5 Review - Now Supports Apple Watch!

Awesome news Anthony!!! Keep up the good work. Look forward to further updates.

Great ideas, especially making the horizontal iPhone app interactive. It seems crazy that you have to turn the phone sideways to get any detail. The app is extremely rudimentary with many needs for customization and improvement of the display/alerts.

Hello All,

I am looking into getting a CGMS and the Dexcom is at the top of the list. I am at odds though between the G4 and G5. I keep reading conflicting reports that the G4 is not available any longer, and when you get a G5 there is no receiver shipped for anyone new to a CGM.

I am a new CGM user - will I get a receiver if I opt for the G5 unit? Is the G4 actually still available? I would need to have a receiver in any event since they are not covering but 10% of the Smart Phone market and I do not own any Apple products. (Not that they are bad in any way, just not for me)

Does anyone know if they are actually going to provide support for Android / Android watches any time in the foreseeable future? I really did not want to have to carry more “stuff” with me, but to get the benefits of the CGM it is something I am willing to do for the time being.

Thanks,
Gary

I reviewed the Dexcom website and found this:

Of the three parts of the Dexcom system is a compatible smart device (not included) OR a Dexcom mobile receiver.

Under the Dexcom Receiver section it says that a receiver “comes with your system.”

I suspect anything that goes against the Official Expiration Date or implies that it may not be as absolute as all their documentation and guidelines say it is will be pushing against a pretty hard current. I’m sure there are a lot of factors, not all of them strictly technological or scientific, behind that number. But it is unquestionably a great idea, for the very compelling reasons you state.

Just kind of a footnote, but this is one of the points where there’s been a lot of confusion, especially early on after the G5’s release to the market. Some people were being wait-listed, but if you were a G4 user with an upgradeable receiver, and a transmitter due for replacement, there was no delay in getting a G5 transmitter and no additional cost beyond the normal transmitter replacement because you didn’t need a new receiver. I don’t think new customers were subject to that; I think it was mainly people trying to upgrade from G4 who didn’t have compatible firmware–basically it was a question of whether you had a Share-capable receiver or not. Dunno if the wait-listing is still going on but it didn’t apply to people whose transmitters were expiring and I assume that goes for brand new users as well. Of course if you’re starting from scratch you get a G5 receiver as part of the package, as you say.

While I know that we users should openly voice our preferences regarding diabetes tech issues, it’s been my experience for one reason or another that many user suggestions fall by the wayside. The Animas belt-clip poor design persists even after lots of user complaints.

You could have an “emergency extend” feature already in place if you think of the two-hour sensor expiration warning as a sensor expiration notice. You could then extend for two hours at your convenience. I know that’s not as satisfying as having the manufacturer modify their software but this rethinking is completely under your control.

I’d like to see much faster iterations in D-tech design improvements. I think their “user studies,” done when the final specifications are still malleable, are not given the time, resource, and attention they deserve.

What I’d like to know is if the G5 sensor has the same ability as the G4 to be “reused” for more than 1 week. I currently get 2+ weeks out of my G4 sensors, which saves a LOT of money and time. I’m looking forward to updating to the G5 setup, but would like to use the G5 sensors in the same way as the G4 for length of use.

Yes, it does. Just restart the sensor without changing it.

The “G5 sensors” are the G4 sensors. No difference. The big change in the G5 system is the transmitter and receiver. As stated upthread, the G4 Share receiver can be upgraded with a firmware update to G5 status. The G5 transmitter is new and improved hardware from the G4.

The G5 system and sensors can be restarted at the 7-day mark just like the G4 system.

The G4 transmitter and receiver are still available - I just ordered a new G4 receiver from Edgepark yesterday. I was also reminded that my 3-year old fully-functional receiver is out of warranty and can be replaced.

Regarding Android support:
Nothing is official, but it sounds like Dexcom’s head of software development thinks the Android App might get past the FDA by late 2016 (based on the podcast linked below:
http://www.ardensday.com/juicebox-podcast/mensinger38).

Together with the reduced range of Bluetooth signal and the larger transmitter, this made it easy for me to decide to stick with the G4 for now. Hopefully by time I switch there will be a direct-to-watch option and a smaller transmitter.

I listened to a podcast and they said they will be getting a windows phone app but if android won’t be out until late 2016 then the windows app will be out in 2017 if then. Love my windows phone but it is times like these that make me consider switching

I just ordered new sensors and this is what I heard on the phone. There is a wait list for upgrade customers. Assistant told me my insurance would pay for a new receiver and transmitter. I said okay. They said G4? I said no G5. They said okay it’ll ship tomorrow.

Hi Mike, do you experience a big time lag/delay between the G5 app in the iPhone and the value on your Watch?

Hi BK - there is a lag time but nothing crazy. Also, I’m now using the WatchSugar app which adds the Dex result as a complication and it’s awesome. Although, there is some lag there as well.

Why would there be a lag from the phone to the watch? Seems like the readings would be synchronized.

This issue isn’t with the phone or watch themselves, but rather that you have to use the “Dexcom Follow” app to see your readings on your watch.

Side note: thanks @mikep for mentioned the WatchSugar app. I’ve been hoping someone would develop that for a long time. Added it as soon as I saw your post.

Hi, thanks for the reply! I understand that the watchSugar is only able to download the value from the Dex server every 17 min which is not really good enough considering that the G5 is measuring every 5 min.
Would anyone know how big the delay is in the Follow app? I’m getting my gear by the end of this week and I’m really looking fwd to it!

Just got this reply from Dexcom after complaining about the missing AW connection. I think it sounds like good news, if we assume that the legal channels will not take ages:
Hello Bojan,
Thank you for contacting Dexcom Professional Technical Support.
We apologize for the delay on the release of the G5 app for the iWatch. We are nearly done with the development of the app and once it passes approval from legal channels we will release it. Please visit our website at: www.dexcom.com/global as we announce any upcoming releases or news there promptly. Once again we apologize for any inconvenience that this delay may have caused.
