Dexcom G5 Review - Now Supports Apple Watch!

Can anyone tell me whether the transmitter can send data directly to the watch when out of range od the phone? Sounds like Terry is saying it does need to go through the phone?

Thanks for the heads-up on this btw!

It cannot at this point. I think it may be a regulatory thing, but not 100% sure. What’s interesting is that in the settings on the Apple Watch under Bluetooth, there is a specific section for “Health Devices” however you cannot connect it directly.

After a couple days I’m loving it and as stated before, the update time is nearly zero for me when I glance at my watch to see my number and graph.

Hmmm that’s interesting, since I think Dexcom implied at one point that Apple wouldn’t let them bypass the phone. Maybe that will be the next update!

Thanks for the info!

Speaking of Apple watches…the damned dog (I mean our cute little puppy whom I dearly love) chewed the crap out of my Apple watch sport band after our cat pushed my AW off the bathroom counter and onto the floor for the dog’s oral enjoyment, destroying it completely. Cost me a whopping $49.00 to replace that simple silicone (or whatever material it is made out of) band. Ouch!

That is a pricey watchband. I also bought a Pebble Time watch with a similar watchband and I don’t like the comfort of it nearly as much as the AppleWatch band. The Apple Watch band is far more comfortable to me.

Sometimes our beloved animals cost us. Does your cat enjoy machiavellian intrigue??!

Most definitely! She enjoys enabling the puppy to make poor decisions and then laughs smugly while the dog is in time-outs.

You should check Amazon. Lots of 3rd party sellers now with the silicone bands for much cheaper.

Hi Mike, just installed the update. Did you get your compliaction to work? Mine only shows a Dexcom icon, which is not more than a link to the Dexcom app. It would be nice to be able to see a number there like on the watchsugar.

yes, mine is the same. There isn’t a complication for the number yet. I liked the watchsugar complication but it took forever for mine to update. I prefer glancing down at the number and graph anyway, which is easily done by setting the watch to show last app on wrist raise.

Honestly, now, finally, the G5 makes complete sense. The last remaining step would be a rechargeable transmitter, which would bring down the cost. But everything else is perfect.
Regarding the range and signal loss, I only have this problem when I go into another room. But, for example, when I play tennis and badminton, I can easily be 10+ meters away from the phone and I still get the data from the transmitter into the phone and back to the watch.

A rechargeable battery transmitter is easily achievable but I doubt if they would do it as they would lose money not having to replace transmitters (they charge close to $1000 for a pair) and say the issue is with the FDA?
