Hello everybody! I’m new to this site and I was wondering if there are any diabetics out there that also have coeliac disease?
I think so:) I have never been tested but, it is likely given my symptoms and deficiencies…so I started on a gluten-free diet about a year ago. Are you celiac?? and if so, how do you deal?? I found it easier once I decided to go low CHO as well. I do not crave bread, noodles, cookies, etc. anymore…it actually is a little amazing since I always did not the ADA diet exchanges.
Hi Patricia, yes I have diabetes (for more than 20 years) and coeliac disease (for about 4 years). I’m used to it by now, but at the beginning I found it a bit difficult to care for both because there weren’t many things that were sugar free and gluten free. But after doing the DAFNE course I realise I can eat sugar as long as I put the necessary insulin so finding gluten free food that I could eat became a little easier. Sometimes I think “one was enough! why do I need two conditions now!”, but I guess such is life!! If you want to be sure you are coeliac I’m afraid you have to do a endoscopy, which is not very pleasant, but it’s the only way to know for sure if you have the condition or not. A blood test alone won’t confirm it. Hope this helps!
