Did OmniPod help lower your a1c?

I’m curious… a lot of people post about how much their a1c’s go down after being put on the Omnipod. I know my numbers have been a lot better since, but I don’t go to my endo for another month to get an a1c done. How much did yours change after Omnipodding?

Before starting my omnipod my a1c was 9.1 (yikes) then just 3 short months of being on the pod it was down to 6.5 (yeah), it could depend on how incontroll you are before switching. Like my younger brother is still doing MDI and his a1c is 5.9
I know we all hate him!!! LOL but good luck anyways.

I went from 7.4 to 5.9 after two months on the pod. My most recent was 6.0. As a bonus, my life is a whole lot easier.

3 months after starting the pod last year, I had my lowest A1c ever (that’s in 20 years as a Type I). It was 6.6 or 6.5.
My previous A1c right before had been in the mid-sevens, and my best ever before the pod was a 6.9 (only once, and my endo thought it was an anomalous test since I never repeated it).
However, my most recent A1c was back up to 7.1, so I guess I’m past the honeymoon period  We’ve made some adjustments to my settings in response and hopefully that will bring it back down to the 6.5 range.

This reminds me of some thoughts that come up whenever I read or head discussions about A1c and tight control. We often forget that there is a cost to tight control (ie, A1c in the sub-6.5 range), namely more risk of hypoglycemia episodes. In 20 years as a Type I diabetic, I’ve never had a “hypo” incident where I required assistance.I credit a very high sensitivity to low BG, but also the fact that neither of my endos has been big on the “super-tight” control. We’ve been happy to keep my A1c below 7.5 and not driving hard for a number in the fives. I think some people forget the cost of those really-low A1c; I like not worrying about hypoglycemia. Furthermore, there’s been some studies that show the long-term benefits of very tight control as not as large as once thought.

Pre pump = 7.2

3 months after = 6.9

And that covered Thanksgiving,my birthday, Christmas, and New Years! Four HUGE dinners and 3 parties.

Wow, that was a good jump down! Gives me a lot of hope!!!

I wasn’t in control at all before the omnipod - I could have cared less actually - checked glucose maybe 5 or 6 times per week, not per day. Now I’m testing 7-10 times per day (depending on what kind of day I’m having) and I’m very cautious of what I eat and when I eat, etc. I hope I have as much luck as you did! I’ll certainly post the new a1c when I get it checked next month.

Wow, Leigh! That’s great! Mine doesn’t cover Thanksgiving, but it did cover Christmas, New Years, bridal parties and birthday parties for others! I’m SO looking forward to my new a1c now!

I just got my blood taken this morning. I’ll post the results next week after my appointment

Fingers crossed for you,man!

I was diagnosed at 15.9. Two months later, I was at 7.2. Three months later, and after having the Omnipod for 1 month, my A1c is 5.6.

Wow, Emily! That’s wonderful!!! I go for my A1C test on the 13th (Friday the 13th— of all days!!!).

lol! the 13th?!? sheesh! prove supersticious people wrong… and get an AWESOME A1c, k?

I’m aiming to do so! It’s GOT to get better than the last 9.5 I had!
I won’t get the results until a week later, but I’ll definately keep everyone posted here!

chances are, you’ll be pleasantly suprised with your new A1c. I was! i kept telling myself that it would be terrible, and when I heard 5.6, i was dumbfounded!

btw, last time i got my A1c (maybe 2-3 weeks ago), my doctor didn’t have to send out my blood sample. the doctor’s office had their own A1c calculating machine! all she did was a finger prick, and took like… 2 drops of blood. they took it to the machine, and about 5 minutes later, she walked in with the results. i don’t know how many doctor’s offices have this new machine… but i think it’s great! no more blood drawn and no more waiting! and, this is very new. they didn’t have it 3 months ago. so maybe there’s a chance your doctor’ll have it, too!

I went from 10.1 to 6.5 in just two months! I was so happy and excited, from then on it’s been getting lower every time =)

They’ve been doing this at Vandy for at least 2 or maybe 3 years. The nurses don’t even make me wait for the dr or CDE to give me the results- I know before I leave the triage room.

I found that the pod has helped me stabilize my A1c. On MDI I was at 5.4, but with that number I was having some pretty serious hypos, particularly in the middle of the night. Have been on the Pod for over a year now, and my A1c has ranged from 5.9-6.0 with no more of the crazy hypos.

I went form 9.1 to a 7.4. not the best but a lot better.

LillyBell-

I wouldn’t say the Omnipod lowered my A1C. I would say it helped me gain tighter control and I gained better knowledge of insulin use. We control our on destiny when it comes to blood sugar control. We can either eat what we want or control what we eat. The key is learning how to properly carb count and bolus according to meals with or without the pod. My A1C dropped when I started using the pod but it’s more of an education thing for me.

Cherise

I was on a MM pump when I switched to the pod. Pre pod was 7.9 after pod 7.2. I am super sensitive to lows and have had some pretty awful hypo reactions in the past so until I agree to a CGM I doubt I will get below 7.0 (which is my goal right now)
