Hi, so I know everyone has different things that make their blood sugars go high or low, but the one thing that affects me most often is diet coke.
Every time I drink diet coke, my numbers drop down into the 60’s and this almost always seems to be the case…even if it doesn’t reach the 60’s, it dips down a lot lower than where it was.
Just curious as I was drinking diet coke at work tonight, and does anyone else have this issue or anything weird/similar to it? Feel free to share any random stories!
One thing it could be is the the aspartame is tricking your brain. This is all my reasoning here and I don’t have any science to back it up. Artificial sweeteners have been in the news lately regarding weight gain. I’m guessing that you still get the taste of sugar, so your brain things that you are going to get some. When it does that it may uptake some of the glucose from the serum. I could be completely wrong, but it makes sense in my mind.
It’s not a story of mine, but I have a friend whose bloodsugar spikes high every time she drinks diet sodas. Supposedly that can be linked with too much caffeine and adrenaline release. Adrenaline stimulates your liver so it releases glucose into your body.
I haven’t noticed Diet Coke messing with my numbers all too much. There could be validity to the “artificial sweeteners tricking your brain” theory. You were diagnosed a few months ago, right? My guess is that it’s a mix of the sweeteners tricking your brain and the fact that you may still be making a little of your own insulin. Not that I’m hoping this, but I’d imagine the drop into low bloodsugar will go away after a while.
yeah, i was only diagnosed in march…and i’m definitely still in my honeymoon stage. so my numbers go crazy sometimes, but both of those theories make sense. i know diet pop has been making the news like crazy, and i’m trying to stay away from it, but it’s hard because i can only take so much water sometimes, haha.
I dont have any issue with diet sodas, its regular sodas that get me. I will drink some soda go "ok i have to be high" and find that im low. Good to note that i haent ever tried to treat lows before discovering this. Some days i can eat extras and find myself having good numbers. other days i eat like 5 extra carbs and i spike upwards. Thankfully this doesnt happen to often.
