Charlie, I've tried drinking two beers that are brewed with barley, but claim that the gluten has been removed, Daura (from Spain) and Prairie Path. They both gave me symptoms of Celiac. There are some beers brewed with rice and/or sorghum, for instance Redbridge, but I find that the taste is not too beer-like.
I have talked to some who can drink beer and others that can't. CD is usually genetic but a blow to one's system can cause it. I got lucky and went to Thailand instead of Nam.
I wasn't exposed to agent orange but managed to come back with infectious hepatits in 1966, then it was Diabetes in 1971 and DH in 1992, CD in 1996, before I got a computer. All of this was explained in the artice I saw, in fact it was one of the best articles I have ever read, written by Dr. Murray's nurse & and she often speaks at the CSA conferences.
One time I asked this GI doctor why my villi had never been affected by drinking or using the same toaster. He said; "you don't have Cd and you can eat regular food" I hurried home and told my wife what he said. She said: "that is BS just because the first GI doctor you saw can't find your records, still I would stay on a g/f like the Article said." If you have ever seen someone with those red, itching DH blisters, there is no doubt that I had that". My dermalogist refused to see me about getting his records, and his nurse said "He only does liposuction surgery & he won't see you". I had even told him that I was on a whole wheat diet because of my diabetes and he thought that was a good thing. I even put wheat germ on my ice cream when I ate that.
My wife bough me a 6 pack of the first g/f beer they ever made. It was so bad that even this next door alcoholic couldn't drink it. It foamed and foamed & foamed some more when we opened it.
I guess when we have autoimmune diseases and have had to deal with such as hepatitis, life is a constant daily experiment. That GI doctor was obviously clueless. Btw, I'm 83 years old and have 5 autoimmune conditions.
Good story about the first GF beer! I do envy you your ability to drink beer. I now drink Redbridge (not too much foam!)and wine.
I love dry red wine and usually stick to one glass day. On this page someone talked about gaining weight. I eat 50 carbs at most meals unless I am on a cruise. I weighed 128 when I joined the USAF in 1957. I weigh 132 now but I do a lot of excercise and bike riding. If I am the one "following" I apologize I'm not familiar with using this post and this is the first time I have commented in years.
I prefer white wine, Riesling for a treat, but a glass of red now and again is also nice. My weight is low and stable, but increasing the size of meals would soon change that! So would eating all those rich GF cookies for sale... I guess there's something to be said for eating mostly meat, fish, vegetables; I also eat fruit, esp. apples and berries.
The "Stop Following" showing on this page means you will get an email whenever someone posts on here. You won't be notified when it says just "Following"; clicking on it changes it back and forth. I'm a bit of a lurker myself, but I love TuDiabetes!
Hey! any advice on dealing with a gluten free diet while at college? I have had type 1 diabetes for 13 years, and celiac for 3 years. I am living in a dorm next semester for the 2nd time, and i wont have much access to fresh vegetables and meats. My reactions have gotten much worse over the past year, and I am having trouble controlling both my blood sugars and my stomach at the same time.
I was diagnosed with LADA two years ago and have started a gluten free diet recently for Celiac disease. I know everyone is different, but does anyone know generally how long it takes to gain back all the weight I have lost ?!
It's been 3 years and I've only gained about 3 lbs. I keep thinking it will come back but I've finally had to buy way smaller clothes! Funny, every time I think I've gained, I weigh myself and I'm at the lowest weight! Maybe it's just age and it readjusting. I asked this question at a celiac group discussion and they said it would come back? But it hasn't. Are your clothes falling off?
I gained back my weight after going gluten free (18yrs ago) after about a year or two of GF. Now I’m really struggling to gain back weight after a possible thyroiditis and LADA diagnosis. It’s been 2 years this time and I’ve only gained about 8 of the 28 I lost so much slower going with the BG problems. I think having both issues makes it tougher. I weigh what I did in high school now so it’s not too bad, but 5 more lbs would actually be my preferred minimum.
Brianna, can’t give you much advice for college eating as I wasn’t diagnosed until my 30s. These days dorms should be pretty good about accommodating you though, hope you’ve spoken to them about your gluten issue.
When I got my Metronic pump at age 65, the first thing I had to was learn to count carbs. Things like bread, potatoes, pasta has a lot of carbs in them, I do eat one slice of g/f bread at lunch and I like baked sweet potatoes but I stick to a 7oz at dinner sometimes. I average about 50 carbs per meal.
I still weigh 130 at age 74. I walk or ride a bicycle a lot. I never get hungry or thirsty so I guess that helps. I used to have a lot of lows till my doctor got this Tech. from Metronic to set my pump ratios till it really had the correct setting !
I was at 116 lbs. Lost down to and leveled out at 107-108 for about a year, then lost more down to 104. Have gone from size 6 to size 4 and that's with taking everything in at the waistline ! I'm too old to shop in the Junior department !! I eat 3 full meals a day with snacks in between and I'm on insulin (low amount so far) which is suppose to cause weight gain. Guess I could get those small hand weights out and build up muscle ?!
Here is an interesting article concerning a pill that will help Celiacs on a gluten-free diet to be truly gf. I can't avoid getting wheat crumbs now and then, and other cross-contamination, so I look forward to this pill becoming available. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/06/17/celiac-disease-pill_n_5501436.html
I would love a pill like that Trudy especially when eating out and traveling. I take lactaid for dairy, I still have to limit it but it helps, however there’s been no effective help for digesting the gluten protein. Even though things are better than they were 18 yrs ago when I first went GF, you know restaurants are going to expose you to some cross contamination. I’d love to be able to travel more and not have to worry about spending part of the trip feeling lousy after getting some hidden gluten. Fingers crossed these aids work!
Hi Lilli. I like a good beer; two gf beers that are brewed with barley and then supposedly have all the gluten removed (Daura and Prairie Path) are pretty good, but gave me Celiac symptoms. Maybe with that pill I could drink one of them! Maybe next summer...
I find that taking a good probiotic (which I buy refrigerated from a health food store) allows me to eat & drink dairy w/o any problems. I confirmed this recently when I ran out of the probiotics and thought I'd see if I really needed them. After a couple of weeks of belly aches and worse, I bought my probiotic capsules again--they worked within a couple of days. The darn things are expensive, but they really do work for me. Summer with ice cream!
Do you like a particular probiotic brand Trudy? I’ve taken them on and off but will defiantly try them again and watch the lactose reaction. Having to count carbs now I’d like to eat more cheese for a protein snack but usually pay a price if I do:(
I don't see much difference in the brands, but I make sure that they are the refrigerated types and that they contain at least Acidophilus and Bifidus. The Aidophilus and Bifudus are also in Greek yogurt, but I ate Greek yogurt during that two weeks and it didn't help. I like Tilamook Extra Aged Cheddar Cheese. I've read that hard cheeses don't contain lactose, so you must be very sensitive. Do you by chance have a problem with casein?
I don’t know Trudy, I thought casein and dairy were the same things?
My understanding is that casein is the protein(s) in dairy, so a sensitivity to casein is different from a sensitivity to lactose. If you can't eat hard cheese, I would wonder about a problem with casein rather than a problem with lactose. Hmmm, I hope I know what I'm talking about!
