I’ve always been a pretty healthy eater, low fat, whole grains etc… but once in a while (every couple months) I want fast food, or Dairy Queen or just junk food in general. My question to everyone is, do you still indulge once in a while? knowing you have to take a bunch more insulin to cover your indulgence. I’m curios to know because I really want a blizzard with the temperature being so high. (43 C tomorrow 104f)
Heck yeah! My usual WOE is 30-40 carbs a day. The day I found out my A1C went from 8.4 to 5.9 I left the endo’s office and headed straight for the best bakery in town. That chocolate croissaint was sooooooo good, well worth the extra insulin. I do ‘indulge’ maybe once a month, maybe a little more. Some good ice cream from a local farm, satisfying a craving for pasta and eggplant parm, etc. I eat really well as a rule, food I enjoy, but sometimes… ya know?
My 17 yr old son has T1 and was just diagnosed a year ago. As long as he eats healthy most of the time, we let him indulge once in awhile. It’s all about moderation.
I am the same way, I eat healthy breakfast and lunch and then take a monster bolus in the evening and let 'er rip. There was a diabetes psychology video around, I don’t have a link and the thread devolved into a “how to post videos” primer (which was also useful…) but the video described this as being a “werewolf” which those of us with children on “Team Jacob” may find more amusing than others? I like fried stuff and meat and booze more than blizzards though. I am totally addicted to potato chips so I really have to ration those or run like 30 miles/ week.
I’ve cut almost all of the true “junk” out of my diet, but yeah, I eat basically whatever I feel like, and my diet looks a lot more indulgence-heavy than a lot of people’s (tonight’s meal: three grilled chicken fajitas and a coffee mug half-full of mint chip ice cream). My basic rule of thumb is that if I can cook it, I can eat it. I’d probably shy away from the Blizzard, partly because there are tons of carbs, but also just because it’s heavily processed, full of empty calories, and will give me a brain freeze (which is as bad as any medical problem I’ve dealt with ). For a more fun and lower-carb “beat the heat” drink, I recommend an ice-cold beer or two instead.
I’ve been trying to figure out a good way to work beer in. Sometimes I can have a few with some cookies or crackers and be fine, other times I have one and my blood sugar spikes, then dips real low early in the morning. Any hints?
Well, I’m trying to follow a moderately low-carb diet, and I try not to indulge too often, but sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. For me, the limit is that if I indulge too often, I start craving carbs. I do find that a healthy dose of protein helps stop those cravings, but when I’m in the middle of them, it’s hard. So I’d say, have your blizzard (I don’t even know what that is), but just this once – don’t let it become a habit!
lol Natalie! Blizzards are soooo good! The ultimate milkshake.
A blizzard is soft serve ice cream blended with cookies or chocolate bars or anything else that’s bad for you
Yeah. I guess it isn’t really a milkshake…but still… so good. You look thin Mike… you could probably go for it. Welcome from another member from Ontario.
Bud Select 55= 1.9G of carbs. Guinness= 9G/ 12 oz, according to the label. The AM thing is interesting. A lot of my best AM blood sugars pre-pump were the AM after I’d have like 1/2 a bottle of booze and get blasted. I think that one can sort of get in the habit of adjusting one’s BG strategy to beat up Dawn Phenomenon that is there naturally. I think the main thing is to eat when you are drinking. Which sort of comes naturally if you are a potato chip addict? Heheheheh. A lot of the more “crafty” beers seem to have a lot more carbs in them. I keep some of those around for after my longer runs and use them for flussigkeitbrot and then a case of the low octane stuff for the rest of the time? It seems to work ok.
The way you talk about your beloved beers almost makes me wish I could drink! I appear to have a genetic intolerance to alcohol, as even a swallow or two makes me feel ill. And I’ve always been that way, even as a child, when we used to drink wine for Passover (yes, the kids were served wine, too!). But the up side to it is anyone who goes out with me and wants to drink always has a designated driver, LOL!!
eeek!!
I definitely indulge, and I LOVE Blizzards! My favorite is a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Blizzard. I just usually get the smallest size, bolus well for it, and make sure to get some exercise either before or after. Enjoy it!
Son just got one of those a day I took him and his brother miniature golfing. It was the smallest (really thats all anyone needs); his cgms showed that he flatined for hours after it. He has 15-20 gram “treats” all the time, more this summer because we are having difficultly knowing his insulin needs since they have seemed to change so much since school got out. For example; tonight he’s had 3 carb combo snacks(at different times) since dinner just so he won’t be low before bed.
Yep!! I have never tried a Blizzard., I think I will now! I eat very little during the day, so I do allow myself to Indulge sometimes…called “Living”.
Its my motto…People always ask how do I stay so discipline against the major no-no foods and I simply say its because when I REALLY want it to the point its almost a need, I eat it…If its just a small craving then I can over power it when I substitute…For example today is my mother’s bday and I didnt have a great need for cake but later I had a sweet tooth so I had a spoon of Nutella…
104??? Yeah I would go for it
Please do its the best ever!
So who’s selling these blizzards? You guys make me want to INDULGE!! LOL!
LOL, sounds like I ought to try a Blizzard, but I really prefer affogato coffee with a serve of Baileys over the icecream for my indulgence.
