Do your emotions fluctuate with your blood sugar?

I get moody when my BS is either low. Everybody at work will come up to me and say, “you’re crabby, go check your sugar,” and sure enough it will be low every time.

when i am low i feel like i have like cold sweats and i start feeling nervous and everything. when i am high i turn into a big…monster lol! and my lips go numb!

Yes, that is what they say. I still have really good hypo awareness and have had DM for 10 years, and I do have good control

Just last night I totally had a meltdown…more like a temper tantrum (and I’m 25 years old). If my blood sugar continues to drop low over a few hours, I lose it. I get frustrated, anxious, and I cry and carry on. Now, I’m totally exhausted today. I get over it, but it’s like I’m some crazy person. It only happens once in awhile, but I become quite the monster at my house.

Unfortunately, yes. I have been diabetic for over 15 years now and I can say that my blood sugars have played a huge roll in my emotions. Being aware of your mood swings can help you identify your blood sugar lows and highs a little quicker though… Good luck!

Totally true, I feel the same…espacially with the low. I believe its a normal biological reaction.

My son (14, diagnosed 9 months ago) gets kind of spacey when he’s too high. He doesn’t get low very often (probably at the end of the honeymoon phase) but when he gets kind of low (70 - 80ish) - he can tell. When he’s high he is also tired and more irritable… I am not diabetic but I do get hypoglycemic and lots of the same symptoms that diabetics get with low blood sugar (sweaty, dizzy, irritable, etc…) and I know that it affects your emotions a great deal.

yeap. i get cranky easily.

Yup, if I’m over 200 I turn melodramatic.

Yes I do and I think it is preety common.

When my blood sugars are high: lethargy, inability to concentrate, depression
When my blood sugars are low: shaking, and becoming extremely quiet to a monster for no reason

I’ve found for me I need to keep my blood sugars in very tight control (80 - 100 pre meals and no higher than about 140 2hr after meals) or all the effects hit me like a ton of bricks.

sounds just like me your not alone, comrade

you know you use a different system to count your blood sugers than here in the uk high is above 7 and low is below 4. whay do you forieghn people always got to be different.

i believe it does effect your emotions. but for me im pretty stable what ever the weather. im always the type of bloke that a nice girl like you will adore

I don’t think there is another diabetic I’ve come in contact with thats as sensitive as I am. If I feel fine generally I will be around 90. Hypothetically if I am near 100 and eat even a crumb I can feel the sugar spike and become instantly irritable. Its really bad. It causes severe anxiety and depression. I have too be in such tight range and I rarely ever feel stable. My nerves are shot to say the least and its unfortunate because there really is nothing anyone can do to help me. I rarely go out unless I have to. Forget about traveling or dating. I’m convinced one day I will just go psycho if they don’t either cure it or something like smart insulin proves effective.

Yes, that’s quite common from what I hear. I know my son is really irritable and mean when he’s running high!

My son becomes wicked hyper when he’s high, wicked cranky when he’s low. So yeah… not uncommon at all.

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh yes. Just ask my poor husband lol. Luckily he is very supportive and I start on a pump on Tuesday so am hoping to minimise those BG swings!

Absolutely. Both when I’m high and when I’m low I am much angrier and have a shorter fuse. My wife and I have an agreement. If she asks me to check my BG, I immediately do so. No comments, no fighting, nothing. Just check. For that she promises not to get mad at me if I act like an a$$ and have a high or low BG.

Well, I get very, very cranky if I get a high. You would not to be anywhere near me when that happens; I guess no one would…
