Does diabetes run in your family?

I was the only one with diabetes in my family when I was diagnosed, but 2 months later a second cousin just one year older than me died of DKA at onset.

No.

My paternal grandmother and grandfather were type 2 insulin dependent. Several of my grandfathers brothers and sisters were also type 2. My maternal great aunt was type 1 diagnoses in the early (just after Insulin invented). She lived with diabetes till she had her grandchildren or in the early 70’s. She was 22 when diagnosed. I also had a 3rd cousin on my mothers side with type 1. Some took excellent care and others did not. It was a good motivator for me as I saw double amputee with grandparents. Blindness with a step son of my grandfather. He was type 1 with no good care. I also saw several who lived to be 94 and expired while taking a walk.
I am fortunate and have no complications and am very healthy. I have 2 daughters from 4 pregnancies and now have 3 grandchildren who are 4 years, 8 months and 6 months. So life is fun. I was diagnosed in 1960 and have seen numerous changes with therapies and care. I am glad to live now with all of the new things helping to keep in good control.

I come from a gigantic (catholic) family - more 1st cousins than I can count - I literally don’t know all of their names. But I am the ONLY diabetic that I know of. I really don’t think my mother believed me until she saw me giving myself a shot for the first time.

In my case, both my parents, some of my aunts & uncles, and at least 1 of my grandparents are/were Type 2 diabetic. In fact, my grandmother was a diabetic amputee. Now I know what it means to be at risk, so I’m trying to stay healthy. I don’t really eat fast food at all, with very few exceptions and I exercise all the time. I know it’s not a guarantee against becoming T2, but it’s all I have.

I was diagnosed Type 1 at age 7 (31 years ago.) My oldest sister was diagnosed Type 1 at 17. My brother was diagnosed Type 1 at age 9. We have one sister that isn’t diabetic.

I believe we had some great uncles that were Type 1. Other than that, there’s no diabetes on either side of my family… Go figure?

My maternal great grandad was type 2, and my paternal grandma is “pre-diabetic”, but I’m the only type 1. (as my dear friend told me, at least I must feel very “special”. (lucky me…?))

It certainly does in my family,
I was dxd (type 1) in 1976 at the age of 2.
My sister was dxd (type 1) in 1985 at the age of 22. My brother was dxd (type 1) in 1991 at the age of 32. My daughter was dxd (type 1) in 1998 at the age of 5 and my father was dxd (type 2) in 1999 at the age of 62

Same for me… no one either side of my family has had diabetes type 1 or 2…

guess I must be the lucky one

I come from a huge Irish Catholic family and I am the only only one with diabetes (LADA) onset at age 53. My father and aunts are still healthy in their 90s and we frequently have four generations at family gatherings. Several of my numerous first cousins have 8+ children and not a diabetic among the lot of them! However, my father and sister and I all have hypothyroidism so autoimmune disease does run in the family. And many of my mother’s relatives died very young of TB and diptheria so I don’t know as much about her side of the family.

Yep, like wildfire. Diabetes is “family affair” here, all on my Dad’s side! T1 & T2.

That I know of, there is or has been:
Dad - T2, takes insulin
my grandmother - type unsure, took insulin. Passed away in 1991 due to Diabetes Complications.
my great grandmother - Type unsure, probably took insulin, Passed away in 1959 due to a stroke.
at least 3 of my dad’s 4 sisters:
my Aunt Joyce - T2, took insulin. Passed away in 2001 from Liver and Colon cancer
my Aunt Sara - T2, takes insulin
my Aunt Leoda - T2 takes insulin
my cousin (Leoda’s daughter) - T1
my cousin’s son - T1
my sis - T2, takes oral meds
and me - T2, take insulin

There are other more distant relatives (2nd and 3rd cousins, great aunts, uncles, etc.) that have or have had it as well, all from my dad’s side of the family.

My mother was just recently diagnosed (T2 - takes oral meds). That we know of, she’s the first in her family to have Diabetes.

My mom was diag. at 78 yrs, type 2 and I now have type 2. I don’t know if any other family members had or have it.

NO! There are no Diabetics of any Type on either side to the great grandparents! CRAZY! My son was dxd w/Type 1 @ age 3.

My mother was adopted and I have absolutely no history from her side of the family at all so for all I know there may have been a high occurance od Diabetes in the family - who knows?
In my Dad’s family, his sister (my Aunt) has recently been diagnosed with Type 2 (she is very obese) but there is no history of Type 1 Diabetes in my Father’s family so I am a bit of a freak allegedly!! (grin!)

I was the first lucky one in my family to become a diabetetic. Than many years later my sister was dx around the age of 26. Hopefully we are the last of the family!

My Mom was Type2 but she is the only one that we know of besides me.

They say that there’s always one in every family and I’m the only one in my entire family that has type 1. My mother’s mom had type 2 for a while but that was due to her weight. She got some wacky bout of hyperthyroid issue and dropped like 40 lbs. Guess what? She’s not type 2 anymore and she was a bit depressed that she had to control the thyroid issue since she dropped so much weight and wasn’t doing much outside her normal workout routine.

Nope. I’m the only diabetic of either type on either side of the family. I heard that one of my dad’s cousins has type 1, but that may or may not have something to do with the same genetic line.

im the only diabetic in my family…its always good to start something new right? lol

Hey Khurt…I have the same lack of family history, and was diagnosed at 50. I wonder if we’ll ever know the reason. Good luck to you.
