I had heard that T1 is more prevalent among Scadinavians…I am 1/2 swedish.
As I stated earlier…no one in my family, that I am aware of had DB, but my father always said he was, “borderline Hypoglycemic.” He needed to eat often, as I did before diagnosis, or we’d get shaky, weak , crabby, etc. I have heard that people who tend toward low blood sugars are more likely to develop T1. Anyone else heard that?
No diabetes does not run in my family, I got Type 1 because I got pancreatits more than 7 times in a 3 year span.
YEP, both sides –
on my mom’s side, granddad, uncles, cousins. I developed at a much younger age than all others (age 45) – attribute my T2 to an early (teen-age) case of apnea that has affected everything – energy, mood, weight, ability to cope with infections AND ability to metabolize glucose.
dad’s side, most of the nasty stuff is cardio-vascular, but the uncles and aunt and many of the cousins get diagnosed as type 2 around age 60.
I am the only one with Diabetes in my family:( gotta love Type 1.5
Wow, Most of the people here aren’t related to any type 1’s. That’s certainly not the case for me…here it goes…Me, My dad, 2 of my uncles , my little cousin and they suspect her two brothers may be developing it …so that brings the grand total to 5 and possibly (but hopefully not) 7 in the future. We all developed it at various ages from very very young to mid 40’s.
Yes it runs in both sides of my family, I had a aunt that was Type 2 and My grandmother that I recently lost to various complications was also Type 2. I think it is the hardest thing to watch a family member go through all these complications and then realize that what they are going through is most likely our futures as well.
My daughter and her father are both Type 1. Both of his parents are Type 2 - but he’s adopted. No type 1 or 2 in my family.
I’m the lucky one in my family, too (T 1.5,) although my father always said that he was borderline hypoglycemic.
My sister and I are both Type I. She was diagnosed at the age of 14 (almost 15) and I was diagnosed at 20. Our brother is 12, and he hasn’t been diagnosed. My grandfather has Type 2, but I don’t think it’s related.
Yes, my mom has had type 1 since she was 5.
Hello! We traced back in our family tree when brother was dx with type1 and found nothing that linked gene wise. Then i was dx type 1 later on in life. Now my uncle just became type2 diet controled so it must have been some gene link. But my brothers was after a flu vaccine. And mine was not getting over a flu. diabeticidol94
No one has diabetes but me.
I’m the only one! No one on my mom’s or dad’s side of the family can remember anyone being diabetic, t1 or t2 (I’m t1). We will be watching our children closely, as t2 does run on my husbands side of the family. My MIL was dx’s with pre-diabetes and came out of it by checking her BG and dieting quiet a bit.
No one in recent history has either type. I figure at some point in the past, someone had it and died. Prior to about 100 years ago, people died of all kinds of things that they don’t (or very rarely) die of today. So some 8th cousin of mine might have gotten type 1 when they were 7, died within 6 weeks, and was buried in the field with their sibling who died of an ear infection, and the one who died from who knows what when they were a week old. That’s why people back then had so many kids, and no one necessarily kept track of what they died from if they even knew what it was.
I am the only one in any of my family that I know of with type 1, although my grandfathers on both sides (among others in the family) had type 2. I remember when I was diagnosed the endocrinologist told me that type1 is a part of the autoimmune family of diseases and these diseases, which can sometimes be (theoretically) triggered by a prolonged illness or some other stressor, can manifest themselves in different ways in different people. My grandmother on my dad’s side had severe rheumetoid arthritis, another autoimmune disease, and hers started in her 20’s after having hepatitis. They thought that might be the genetic link to my autoimmune disorder. I never really looked into this topic, but I guess it kind of makes sense. All of them have to do with your immune system going wonky and attacking some part of you that it shouldn’t.
One thing I wonder, and haven’t gotten a straight answer about, is how likely are you to pass it on to your children if you have it but your spouse does not? Are there studies done on this? Are there people here who are diabetic who have had diabetic (or non-diabetic) children as well? I am talking strictly about type 1 here. I’d love any info people would be willing to share.
I am the only one in my family that has diabetes. Mom was diagnosed type 2 the beginning of the year…but she had complcations that brought that up…
It does in mine. My father was diagnosed with type 1 when he was in the navy in his early to mid 20’s. His uncle also had type 1 but it was his uncle by marriage (no blood relation). My maternal grandfather had type 2 which I was told by my CDE increases my insulin resistance.
Type 1 doesn’t run in the family as far as I know, I am the first with Tpye1. There are a few of my dad’s brothers and sisters who do have type2, as well as my older sister. My grandmother on my mothers side had hypogylcemia I believe but her sister and father died when I was young and we don’t have a history on them. My type 1 is more due to medicine I was taking than to a virus or hereditary reasons. So I really have no one in the family to talk to about this since theirs are all different than mine, that is why I love this site, it gives me a place to discuss this with others in the same boat as me. take care all.
No Type 1 other than me. My Grandfather developed Type 2 when he was in his late 60’s.
