Does Exercise Make Your Sugars Run High or Low?

I always find this an interesting topic because its such a fine line between running high and low when exercising. Check out the following article: Why Strenuous Exercise Brings Blood Sugar Levels Up, Not Down in Type 1 Diabetics

That is wierd… I always go low when I exercise. Even mowing the lawn. I need to have like an apple and a sugar tablet either before or during so I don’t drop to 55.

For me depends on the activity. Running lowers my BG and keeps it in great range (around 75 -85). Swimming pushes me low but if i push it it too hard it jacks my BG. The swimming i think is more strenuous than the running for me so i assume it the fight or flight and the liver is dumping glucose.

To me, the physical activity that most incredibly lowers my bg, is not a treadmill, or working out at the gym, or running 5 miles.

It’s painting the house.

It’s not awfully strenuous. It’s climbing ladders, sanding, taping, and painting. But it’s light to moderate, constant physical activity spread over 8 or 10 hours of the day.

When I’m painting the house I have to cut my insulin doses by about 30% or 40% for the time I’m painting and a few days afterwards.

Gardening outside, is not too different activity-wise, but I don’t do that for 8 or 10 hours at a time and it doesn’t have such a profound effect.

I think Dr. B mentions how one of his patients, a professional house painter, has to eat a muffin every hour or something to keep his bg up while painting. IMHO a more appropriate thing would be to cut insulin doses.
