Dr. Phil on tudiabetes Live Wednesday at 3:30 ET!

Hello!
I just wanted to invite everyone to the the Live interview tomorrow (Wednesday) as our very own Rick Philips hosts Dr. Phil at 3:30 ET, 12:30 PT. It is sure to be great conversation! Dr. Phil is very excited to share his story on living with Type 2 Diabetes and be welcomed by our community! We hope you can tune in and that we have a nice turnout and some great questions in the chat room! Cheers! :relaxed:

Feel free to post any questions you might have for the interview and Dr. Phil here!

Here is a little info on Dr. Phil McGraw!

Dr. Phil McGraw is best known as the host of the top-rated daytime talk show, ā€œDr. Phil.ā€ He is also an accomplished author, having written eight New York Times No. 1 bestsellers and is frequently called upon for his expert opinion on current events by major national and international news outlets.

Dr. Phil has lived with type 2 diabetes for more than 25 years. He has recently partnered with AstraZeneca for the ā€œON IT Movement,ā€ an awareness campaign that seeks to empower adults living with type 2 diabetes to take an active role in managing the condition to get on – and stay on – a healthy path. The campaign leverages Dr. Phil’s personal experience living with type 2 diabetes and his professional experience as a former practicing clinical psychologist to engage, motivate and inspire people to commit to take action and more effectively manage their type 2 diabetes. In addition, the ON IT Movement seeks to elevate the national conversation around type 2 diabetes to encourage appropriate action that will better support people living with the condition.

You can count me out. One less person that will not be attending

Sorry to be negative, but I’m with Vertigo. I think ā€œDr.ā€ (he’s not a physician) Phil’s motivations are questionable, and quite frankly, I doubt he knows a whole lot about diabetes…

Well regardless he speaks to a lot of people and can be another ambassador to the world for diabetes… Probably a good person to not alienate from the common cause

Personally, I prefer someone who is not a paid spokesperson for a big pharmaceutical company to be ā€œan ambassador to the world for diabetesā€ā€¦

he’s here to address specifically the stigma and blame associated w type2, the psychosocial aspects of diabetes, and positive steps one can take to achieve better outcomes. one of the steps in his 6 step program is ā€œbuild your teamā€ - and I think that this fits in perfectly with our mission and values. I’m looking forward to it. he’s not allowed to mention any drug treatment recommendations

I haven’t owned a TV since 2001 so my perception of Dr. Phil is based on brief video clips I come across on the internet. I understand that he is a mass-media hit and as such believe that he can help our community.

Here are some issues that I would like discussed:

  • I have type I diabetes and it irritates me when media reports and talk shows refer to type II diabetes simply as ā€œdiabetes.ā€ Please understand that as a T1D we are faced daily with misunderstanding about the clear distinction that exists between T1D and T2D. While we share some of the symptoms with T2D, the disease etiology and treatment are often different. I would appreciate if Dr. Phil always specified ā€œtype II diabetesā€ when he refers to it and not lapse into the imprecise and misleading descriptor, ā€œdiabetes.ā€

  • I have a major problem with the use of the words ā€œcureā€ or ā€œreverseā€ with any form of diabetes. A cure is a treatment that removes the underlying disease and a return to former eating habits or lifestyle will not cause a return of the disease. I think a better word is ā€œremission.ā€ A remission of diabetes symptoms is no small thing in my book. Why use the misleading and dishonest words, ā€œcureā€ or ā€œreverseā€?

I agree with RGCAINMD, regardless of the good words/advice he may provide, the bottom line is that he is a paid spokesperson. This topic came up on TuDiabetes a few months ago. Just Google ā€œdiabetes dr. philā€ and you will see that the company he represents is right there! Who do you think is reaching out to the diabetic community? Dr. Phil? No! The marketing/communcations department of the pharmaceutical company!

I think it is common to question the motivations and behavior of celebrities and people who are paid spokespersons for industrial interests. And Dr. Phil has a history of providing pop psychology advice on TV. That being said I think there are many people who are celebrities who are paid spokespersons for diabetes pharma companies. This includes James Earl Jones who is working for Janssen (which produces Invokana) and Dominique Wilkins who is working for Novo Nordisk (which makes Victoza). What intrigued me about Dr. Phil is that he spoke about the stigma and blame associated with Type 2 diabetes. I have not heard others speak about this topic and I think it is important. Below is the first video from the OnItMovement and I’d encourage viewing it, it isn’t an advertisement.

I think our community is thoughtful enough to ask good questions and put things in context.

Not watching video - don’t like the man. Watched him on Fox News and when commentator asked if he ā€˜used insulin’ he sputtered and clearly evaded the question.

How bout an HONEST answer?

I will to listen to what he has to say but…
He has to make it clear he is a paid to represent aa big pharma company
He is not a ā€œmedical doctorā€ he has a doctorate in psychology,
He should also indicate where he is currently licensed as a psychologist.
It would be nice to know (but not a requirement) the treatment his using,
Whether he has any complication and what his current numbers are. This though is definitely his private information and does not have to be shared,
Does the company he represent support TuDiabetes with donations.

I did read he site, but I did end up on a page with him displaying the company’s product.

One more question for Mr Phil, on your site you recommend eating fruit and whole grains. (I have heard that before) what is his opinion of a LCHF way of eating?

Re ā€œpaid spokesmanā€: from what little I know of Dr Phil I’m not a fan, but we’ve actually had some interesting and useful talks from people who are directly–and financially–involved in developing products such as new treatments, new pumps (Asante, BigFoot) and so on. Might be worth giving some thought to how–or whether–he falls into a distinct category from those people.

I wish him well, and it is certainly an important subject. But I have never trusted him…

I am sorry but find it a bit disappointing that TuD would provide a platform for a TV personality of that type. Count me out.

I think we can each choose on our own whether we wish to attend this live event. Personally I don’t watch Dr. Phil and am unlikely to ever watch him. But I do know that millions watch him and many, many of those people have diabetes. And I hope that many of those people choose to take care of their diabetes because he is now speaking about his diabetes. And there will likely be many people that come here for the first time simply because of Dr. Phil. I think as a community it is important that we welcome him, ask him good questions and talk about what he says. We should always feel free to talk openly, honestly and critically about things but we should always remember that a core value of our community is respect for each other.

I would encourage everyone to pose questions in this thread. If you have probing questions that is great. He has put himself out there and has expressed every willingness to answer questions. If you don’t want to post the questions here you can also send them to @Rphil2 and/or @cynthia_rogers. And of course as usual chat will be active during the live event.

Can he talk about his diagnosis and his symptoms before getting the T2 diagnosis? For instance, he mentioned in an interview that he wasn’t feeling well, with lots of fatigue particularly after exercising. When he was diagnosed, did he have chronically high blood glucose (high A1c) or was he experiencing roller-coaster blood glucose levels including lows?

Great question!! Thanks for asking. Dr. Phil is looking forward to being engaged in our supportive community!

If having Dr. Phil brings only one new PWD to Tudiabetes that has never been here before, then the event will be a success.

I hope we have a lot of people who visit that day and find a new and welcoming home:)
