Eating

What do You eat when you go off your diabetes diet? Just wondering… For some reason I am eating everything in site. Whickh I know is not good for me … :frowning:

Salt and sweet. So therefore right now I’m eating a sm. bag of jalepeno potato chips and a big chocolate chip cookie. I find I go off my diet most when I’m feeling sorry for myself about one thing or another.

hi, Larry, here is a related discussion about “what foods you can’t say no to, even if they cause a high blood sugar” that you may find interesting.

when you feel like you’re going to eat everything in sight, try taking a walk to distract yourself. sometimes it works.

Marie,
Thanks that is a good idea. Sometimes I just feel so hungry even after i just ate.

I hope this doesn’t sound too “goody goody”, but I don’t “go off my diabetic diet”. Not that I am so strong willed, but the key for me is that I don’t think of it as a “diet” altogether. I love to cook and eat good tasting foods and since my diagnosis I’ve gone out of my way to find things that work for my carb intake but are also interesting and enjoyable. If I ate lettuce all day I’d feel deprived. I call it the “twinkie granola syndrome”. You eat “healthy food”, feel deprived and then “cheat”. Find things you really like and enjoy, that satisfy both your hunger and your tastebuds. There is no reason to feel hungry. The only exception to this would be when you first cut down carbs if you have been eating a high carb diet. Your body is addicted to the carbs and sugar and it takes awhile for the cravings to go away.

Zoe,
What kind of things do you find satisfy your hunger and that are good? That is a good analogy I never though of that. I am addicited to carbs I must say…
Thanks for your info

when I go “off-plan” it’s for savory foods. The ones I miss the most are french bread, pasta and rice. So now I work them in by having them just before strenuous exercise because if not, I will be doing strenuous exercise after i test anyway…

This is an old post, but I’ll respond since the thread is live. I’m a vegetarian and a gourmet cook, so the things I eat may be different from the things you eat. But in general, breakfast I eat eggs scrambled with chilis, tomatoes and onions and refried beans (1/2 C). Lunch tends to be cheese fruit and crackers. Dinner is very varied, but includes lots of vegies and measured amounts of carbs. I can eat potatoes in reasonable servings, but pasta is unpredictable and rice is hopeless, as is cereal. But other than that (and being a vegetarian by choice) I pretty much eat what I want, and a great variety. I never feel deprived or hungry or have cravings. The only time I do have problems is when I go out, and the choices aren’t available. My suggestion is to find foods you really enjoy that are meter friendly (test two hours after and see how you do, sometimes a lesser serving of the same food helps). Carb addiction is hard, but once you lower your intake it gets easier as the cravings go away. If you stay stuck in a pattern of “being good” and then indulging, you will have a harder time of it than if you make a plan for a diet you can live with and enjoy. I love eating!

I don’t have a “diabetes diet” at all. Whatever I eat, I figure out or guesstimate the carbs and fire away.

I take a casserole dish cut up summer squash zuccini red yellow green peppers mushrooms onions cauliflower (frozen better) I throw in a few scallops some olive oil cover roast at 375 degres for about 1 hour…good for 2 or 3 meals.

Breakfast 1 egg 0 carbs 3 slices of Hormel pre-cooked bacon

Put egg in bowl add a little milk crumble up the bacon into the egg mixture whip
Put PAM in skillet
Add egg mixture to skillet scramble\A good easy breakfast.

When I go off my diet plan (not something I do alot) Would you belive “real” coke is my favorite? Good ole Classic Coke does fine for me.

I’m om the “See-food” diet…

My two biggest temptations are pizza and fried chicken, but pizza is the one that I’ll give into more often.

lol

Hey Robyn,
So good to see you on. I love Pizza. I could eat it for breakfast. What a minute I have done that before. Hope all is well with you.
