I f a person ate a giant candy bar at midnight and tested on a home glucose meter at 8:30 am the next day and had a fasting glucose level of 106…would you consider this person to be prediabetic? or did the candy bar at midnight skew the results?
I don’t know, but I sure would like to have a bg of 106 in the morning!
In a person who is diabetic, carbs eaten the prior day, and especially a large amount of carbs eaten late the prior day, are commonly reflected in high fasting glucose the next day. In someone who has no tendency to be diabetic, however, the fasting glucose level should easily have returned to normal within a few hours after the carb load, even if it’s a large one. Therefore, while I do think there’s probably some skewing from the candy bar, I also think this person at least ought to be keeping an eye on things, and maybe checking post-meal glucose levels as well as fasting.
Also, keep in mind that home BG meters only have to be within 20% of your actual blood sugar. Your actual bg coul be anywhere from 85 to 127
