Baked beans, country-style ribs, cole slaw, corn on the cob, cream cheese cherry pie, YUM!! To process a meal like that I’d probably have to double my short and long term dose and then check BS every hour and correct as needed for eight hours. Sometimes it’s worth it. I didn’t have anything like that today but I will dream about it tonight. We are in the midst of a hurricane tonight in New England. Happy 4th e everybody!!
Hey, TuD'ers from Europe and other locales: Not all Americans eat like this!
Well, being from Maine some nice Lobstah and Mussels with drawn butter always works for me :-) But if I had my way a nice piece of blueberry cake would go with it.
I think that people in the USA can enjoy more diverse diets than people anywhere else. Nobody ever really brings this up but I’ve watched Anthony Bourdain eat his way around the world and always chat with people from other places but, if we want to eat it, it’s here!
You are so right, AR. We are so fortunate to have access to the cuisines of many different nations. There are also many movements of food in this country such as eating local, eating natural, vegetarian, vegan, and just plain eating healthy as in fresh natural ingredients. With our ability to ship foods we can eat fresh fruit and vegetables all year whether local, from other parts of the country or other countries.
Two of my friends from high school (with a T1 daughter, dx'ed at like 14 or 11 months or something like that...eek...) have been living in the UK for a year or so and came back to visit and were talking about the food there. It sounds hideous. Groceries close at 5:00 PM, meat pies, etc. blech. I totally am into local stuff. We don't have a huge garden but grow a few things and everything we eat from home is *the bomb*. I used to ignore it but, when we hit "local" restaurants, the food is always really good. You can tell the difference. I think that our national food culture is excellent and, if we paid a little attention to it, it would have strategic value. But it's doesn't hit the media that much.
Love corn on the cob and baked beans. Nothing wrong with traditional foods.
I think it depends where you live, AR. Some parts of the country seem to be stuck in the 50s. I think some people still see healthy and fresh foods as deprived and not tasty, when in reality the opposite is true!
Love sweet corn on the cob. Our saying in Indiana is that if our corn is knee high on the 4th of July we will have a good crop. This year our corn is about waist high, its going to be a good corn year for ethanol, feed, compost and some sweet corn in about mid August. It is crazy we import sweet corn until then.
Go figure that the 5th leading corn producing state imports corn. BPG has never said Maine imports Lobstah.........rick
Hey Zoe, I don’t really eat like that either. Would love to be able to but can’t. At the holiday party I went to today, I had a tiny bit of pasta salad on a huge bed of lettuce, four dry shrimp and two pieces of cheese. It was tasty and hit the spot. LOL!
Ditto here, Brian. No potato salad, but my hubby makes a delicious slaw and I make my Mom's deviled eggs which are pretty much 0 carb----though I am capable of eating them like candy and suddenly realizing OMG, I have just inhaled 5 eggs!...Teehee...
My dear Mr Moon! I need these recipes! How have I known you so long and not gotten them? Shame on you! (or me!)...xx000
i know, ive never eaten so many eggs in my preD life! i can easily eat 5 or 6! and deviled, forget it, a dozen, no problem!
im on my way over! that looks amazing!
Here's links to the recipes in case you missed them Judith, a crowd pleaser for sure.
The smaller items are stuffed jalapeno's. cut in half to make a little boat, deseed and devein. Leave on the stem end to prevent the contents from leaking out. Stuffing is usually some kind of cheese or cheese mixture. Cream cheese/cheddar cheese, cheddar cheese/pulled pork etc. Those pictured are parmesan. Finally wrap in bacon. I smoked them for about 1.45 hours @250, an oven would work fine as well.
Yumm I love slaw. Judith send some my way. All the slaw we get here is so full of sugar my BG rises when it passes my table. If I had my way slaw would be a vegetable choice at most restaurants. LOL........................rick
I thought I’d revive this topic, even though @BadMoonT2 's pictures of the bbq etc seemed to not survived the transition. I’m planning on doing some country style ribs myself. but now I’m thinking macaroni salad needs to get into the weekend somehow.
I’ve got bleu cheese cole slaw, potato salad, blt dip and cherry dump cake on my menu. Along with all the dishes that my neighbors will be bringing over. And, of course, dogs, burgers and brats.
Happy Fourth Everyone!

Again this year I am lusting after corn on the grilled pre shucked, grilled over charcoal, when done the green pulled back and dipped in melted butter. The lions club sells this at the fair in my hometown for $2.00 a Cobb. Oh my goodness one ear of that is heaven. I have not had it since I became a PWD. Yet 41 years and I can still taste it
Rick
The corn isn’t quite ready here. BUT, when it is, I guaranteed I will be making a meal of it. And grilling is the best way to go IMO.
