Fiasp-good and bad

That does seem to be a thing, though it’s hard to distinguish whether there isn’t some component of the quicker onset being more noticeable at first because you’re not used to it. In my case I still have a much better experience with it in terms of how far ahead I have to pre-bolus (15-20 min., vs 35-40 or longer), and how fast it clears, which makes temp-basals for exercise more effective. It may be one of those things, too, where your body gets acclimated to one of them, so switching to the other for a while breaks the pattern. But FWIW, I’ve been on it for two years or thereabouts and I’m still fine with it.

I use it in my pump, so the pen increments aren’t an issue, though I do have pens for back up.

Was on Humalog for 20 years ever since I started pumping, maybe even before for awhile too.

Have been on Fiasp for the last 6 months and I just switched back to Humalog this month for a couple of reasons:

  1. Formulary restriction on my insurance this year; so I would have stopped using Fiasp anyway

  2. Itchy, red bumps at the infusion sites. Individually, none of these bumps were too bad. However, in aggregate, as they have built up in numbers, not healed, and accumulated, they are terrible. They have been so itchy that I fear I may have given myself an infection and may need to see the doctor.

You can absolutely dose in half units. Get the Fiasp penfill cartridges, instead of the disposable pre-filled pens, and you can use them with a NovoPen Echo or other pens (such as InPen or Pendiq) that dose in half units.

Thanks so much for this information. I’m actually currently using an InPen for my Novolog. So I’ll make sure that when I get an Rx it’s for the cartridges only.
I’m assuming that the Fiasp is still working well for you.

Yep, it’s not perfect, but it’s way faster than Novolog for me. I can almost anything without worrying about a huge spike, and it makes a huge difference at breakfast. I don’t pre-bolus at all. I find many of the complaints about it come from people using it in a pump. I’ve tried pumping it and agree with many of these complaints, but it’s pretty consistent injecting it with a pen. The shorter effective tail can cause problems sometimes, but I found even with Novolog it often didn’t last long enough to prevent a delayed spike from protein/fat. There are times it doesn’t work as fast or well as I expect it to, but this is usually due to stress/anxiety-related insulin resistance rather than Fiasp - it would happen using Novolog too and would be even worse.
