Genetic Testing?

I’m at the pre-con stage — Got my 3 month A1C results back today down from a 7.0 to a 6.8 moving
along, moving along!! See the endo doc on Friday, we will see what he
says.

The gyno wants me to go for genetic testing – anyone do that? She says cause I’m Italian I have risk factors.

I did this but because of my Jewish risk factors. It was a big decision…in retrospect. Initially I was pretty flip about it, said “sure” to the perinatologist who recommended it, but as soon as the blood was drawn, I got the potential impact, and it was a big one. The bottom line for us was that, barring something fatal/awful, we were probably going to proceed with trying to get pregnant anyhow, but the testing helped us know what our “risks” were once we did that. Turns out all came back clean as a whistle, and now that we’re pregnant, we have little else to worry about aside from normal pregnancy stuff. and diabetes.

Thanks for sharing. I had the first round of blood drawn and I am holding to get results. They said if I come back clean they poke my hubby…

Congrats on being preggers!

So, what are the “risk” factors? I have thought about getting genetic tests done to see if I would pass on the diabetes but my doctor didn’t seem to think there was a point to it.

I’ve never been told I have risk factors because I’m Italian. Interesting…

We opted to not have genetic testing done because we would not act on the results.

Yea, they told me Italians and Jewish folks… idk… She just sent me for it didn’t really ask…

Interestingly, our folks told me that if mine came back “clean”, then the odds of us having genetic anomalies was really small (meaning, no tests for my husband). I don’t quite remember the stats, but apparently if we both came back positive for something, it was higher risk, but if I wasn’t then they weren’t interested in his side. Recalling my 10th grade genetics/bio, I’m not entirely sure why that is…

I was screened for Cystic Fibrosis, but that’s it.

What do italians and Jewish people have higher risks for? Just curious!

There was a whole list of conditions associated with Ashkenazi Jew ancestry. Italian, too? I can’t remember, but my husband & I both have it in our genes so we had the tests done. It all came back fine.
