Grandma Sandy Finds New Home at Diabetes Hands Foundation
Special fund established to support initiatives for grandparents of, parents of, and young people living with diabetes
BERKELEY, CA: March 3, 2014 – The Diabetes Hands Foundation now hosts GrandmaSandy.com among its online sites and has established the Grandma Sandy Fund. This special fund, named in honor of “Grandma Sandy” Hollenberg, will support initiatives and activities aimed at grandparents of, parents of, and young people living with diabetes.
Sandy Hollenberg donated the GrandmaSandy.com site to the Diabetes Hands Foundation so that the materials on the site would continue to be widely available to young people living with diabetes and their families.
“We love [Diabetes Hands Foundation]; it helps so many people,” Sandy said while discussing why she donated the site to the Berkeley, CA-based nonprofit. “We wanted an organization that would take on my baby with such loving care and would let it grow. With all your contacts GrandmaSandy.com will reach so many more people.”
Established after Sandy’s grandson, Malcolm, started using an insulin pump at the age of 4, GrandmaSandy.com houses e-books, games, and puzzles for children living with type 1 diabetes and their families. The materials were written by Sandy Hollenberg, reviewed by medical professionals, and translated into 13 languages by volunteers from across the globe. All the materials on the site are available for free download.
“We are thrilled to be able to honor the incredible work Sandy Hollenberg has done and to keep the mission of Grandma Sandy alive,” said Manny Hernandez, president of the Diabetes Hands Foundation. “By establishing the Grandma Sandy Fund we can take this act of love for her grandson and spread that love among many more families affected by diabetes.”
The Grandma Sandy Fund has been established in honor of Sandy Hollenberg with an anonymous pledge of $50,000 to be given over five years. Beyond covering the ongoing operational costs of the Grandma Sandy site, a portion of this fund will also be used to support educational initiatives for grandparents of, parents of, and young people living with diabetes.
