Happy I get to run again!

I was so sad and upset by all the changes I had to endure the first year of being diabetic.I had alot of things taken away from me. Running was of them. I loved to run and walk and bike ride. My way to escape the world and collect my thoughts. I felt really good to. But then I got diabetes and was told no more running, only 10 min walks. I was so ticked. But for the past 3 years I have learned how to control my D and even managed to get 4mile walks into my week again. So today I went to my Dr. and asked about running again. He said yes I could and gave me information and advice. I am sooooooooo happy!!! I think this is what I missed, being active, I was getting depressed. This diabetes stuff might be o.k after all, now that I can do stuff and know what I need to do to lead as normal a life as possible. I’m going to be O.K! hb

Call me uneducated, but why no running, walking etc? They tell us exercise is a key ingredient to keeping this disease under control…and I’ve been told to get on that bike and go for it. I have arthritis, so it’s not going to be anything like you do…but I’m puzzled by your doc’s advise. Enlighten me please.

I’m so glad you got back something that was a joy to you…enjoy it!

hb that’s great! I had a friend who was told not to do any physical activity again, but she’s be doing triathlons for a couple of years now (as do I). I think it’s fantastic that you’re taking up running again! I know I’d be depressed if I couldn’t get out and move around  Keep us posted on how it goes!

Yay! Have fun!

I’m very happy for you to get to run again. That was my one and only initial question to the doctors… can i still run? They said yes, please do. I’m wondering why they asked you not to run… if you’d be willing to share.

I was with you guys on thinking exercise was good for us to but, I was told not to run and get my activity level down, so no tae-bo, running, walks were limited, stretching, trampoline was limited,I was very active. Had to keep up with a little boy at the time. Anyway I wad diagnosed and then lost 20lbs after 1 1/2 months and Dr. and D educator weren’t sure what was causing the weight loss so they said no more! I saw the dietitian and she said it was the food and increased food portions and got my insulin upped and I was still told no exercising till they figure me out. At the time they didn’t know if I was type 1 or 2 or what. I think my endo is still confused about me but she says it looks like type 2. I got my long walks back as long as I don’t go everyday and I eat before I go and take my phone. Trampoline I go on maybe 2-3 x a month, and tae-bo I have given up. I was told I have to stretch before I go out and take glucose tabs with and definitely my cell for running. I am good with that. It helps that I have a different Dr. then I had at diagnosed. He was very encouraging and said go for it. I asked because I was starting to get stiff joints and couldn’t keep up with my nieces and nephews very well. I am still young (30) and should be able to keep up with everything. Will go for my first run today. hb

Doctors worry about lows with intense exercise.

Did your endo do C-peptide & antibody tests?

Wow. Give up running? For a YEAR? That’s torture. I’m glad you’re back.

You can do all the activities you did before your diagnosis, you know, if you keep close tabs on your BG and stay prepared. Run over to the Athletic Diabetics group and/or go buy a copy of Sheri Colberg’s book “The Diabetic Athlete.”

Welcome back!
