When I got diagnosed my A1C was 16.7% I was wondering if anyone else had it that high or higher?
9.1 or so. It came down to 5.3 within a couple of months and has never been higher since. Even so, I've had every complication imaginable, so at 16.7 I probably would have been dead. Congrats on still being here!
I don't recall at all! It is lost in the mists of time....
13.2, I got it down to 5.6 after a few months but then lost some ground and have been at 5.9 for over a year. 16.7 = an average of 432, wow! I second Cosumne Jan, 13.2 nearly did me in, I might not have made it at 16.7
I have no idea. I don't even know how high my blood sugar was, but it was high enough that my mom got a phone call an hour after I had blood drawn saying that I could go into a coma at any time and to get me to emergency immediately.
I wish I knew the numbers, though, just because it would be interesting (and everyone else seems to know).
Same here Jen, it's been 27-almost 28 years now. I have no idea WHAT my blood sugar was now, but yeah same thing we were about an hour and half away from a decent hospital at the time, where my parents took me to see the Dr. You didnt dare go to the hospital in our little town. It was nicknamed Malpractice Memorial, lol...Anyway we were about an hour and half away in the opposite direction when the Dr contacted my parents. They'd given him my grandparent's number and they said GET TO THE HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY. I too was probably very close to going into a coma at anytime as well. Im trying to remember and I think I recall my mom saying 800's was what my blood sugar was.
Not a clue 30 yrs ago. Just using Tes-Tape back then, nobody had meters. I don't think there was an A1C test in 1980. Maybe I'm wrong. Dad was a pathologist and caught 205 mg/dl in my blood on a routine blood check. Life changed on the spot.16.7 is not good and you got to do your best to get it down to below 7.0, better yet 6.0. You didn't mention your treatment. What are you doing?
I was diagnosed with 13.4 a month ago. One of my nurses told me about how she had someone come in with blood sugar over 1200. She didn't know how he was still walking around- I can only imagine that his A1C was high up there, too!
My A1C as of the 12 DEC was 7.4%. I am on Novolog Flexpen and Lantus Solostar pen.
Almost 29 years ago ,around Jan 25 , 1983 there was no talk about A1C ...I went to Doc , because I was loosing weight, pee-ing , drinking H2O constanty , no sleep , sore vagina , itchy skin and my brain said : diabetes ??? ...lab. confirmed ...BG at 340 .
WOW!!!!
diagnosed Christmas-time of '03 at 12.4. got it down in 3 months to 7.0
Was diagnosed 2/2/11. Mine was 10 at diagnoses. Have had 3 done since then, the first two were 7.8 and my last one in the beginning of December was 7.3. I'm on Novolog, and Lantus.
Mine was 5.4, its higher now and I am not sure why.
I have no recollection of the day I was diagnosed, what my aA1-c was or what the immediate plan for treatment was. I do know that the physician found diabetes in a routine D.O.T. physical exam. He told me that I had diabetes. that is all I remember. I do remember seeing an endo, a CDE and a dietitian.
My experience with the clinic's endocrinology department was less than stellar. I couldn't understand one word the endo said, because he isn't from here. I am told that he is an excellent endo, but I couldn't figure out a word he said. The CDE was a real piece of work. She had a speech to give and any deviation from that plan for daily living was unacceptable. The dietitian explained a bunch of mumble jumble about food exchanges, told me how I was to cook my meals, when to eat them and with what hand. She cried when, after going through that huge speech, that I told her that I do not cook.
Its no wonder that I never cared for my diabetes for the first 15, or so, years. Fast forward to a stroke, a new doctor, endo, CDE etc. and I was on the road to management with a plan that fit my lifestyle. Later re-diagnosed with LADA, I pay attention now.
This is an interesting question. It seems as if it always generates and interesting and unique story.
Mine was 19.5. (gulp)
Can we say I was out of touch with my body?
Mine was 11-something. Admitted to the ER with 809 BG, near death.
Mine was 20-something, which I was later told was the highest the doctors had ever seen. BG in the emergency room was 540-something. My blood was so acidic it was practically vinegar. Amazed I could even walk/stagger into the hospital.
I am pretty sure I never had an A1C run until the mid-1980's, 4 or 5 years after my diagnosis. I remember my docs telling me at the time I first had it run, that it was a "new" test.
I was diagnosed by urine test.
bg test results took between several hours (done in hospital, "stat") and a week (normal labl speed) when I was first diagnosed.
I'm kinda like Nel here. Back 38 years ago there was no A1C and I honestly don't remember how high my bs's were. Hey I was only 10 so I really didn't pay attention I just know it was so high that I went immedantly into the hospital for 3 weeks, Yep the drinking peeing itchy skin no sleep all but the vagina thing were there. Oh and my heart would be beat through my chest. Also was really tired after walking across the room. Had to lay down on the couch after walking from the chair to the couch.
I think it was 13.9. I knew something was up, but at 49 I thought I was too old for Type 1. I was wrong!
