I know as diabetics, we're not immune to addiction.
I've become the "can't function without coffee" type.
I typically drink it black.
Even this requires around half a unit bolus for me. Anyone else?
I'm not on a pump, but I haven't noticed coffee having any effect on my numbers.
I even use some artificial sweetener to my black coffee.
I'm an addict too.
I bolus 2 units for my morning coffee routine...which includes half & half, splenda and a full pot. On top of that, my mornings tend to run a bit high (see: DAWN PHENOMENON) so sometimes I'm bolusing a few units to correct nature's curse too.
Holy donut hole batman. A whole pot of coffee? What kind of cup do you use?
I drink mine with full cream and don’t bolus at all.
I drink two large cups with heavy cream and bolus 1.3 units.
No, I don't need to bolus for coffee. I used to bolus when I used milk in my cappuccino but now I use almond milk so don't have to.
Zoe, do you use a carb-free almond milk? I love almond-milk, but all of the choices I have at my grocery store are sweetened. I'm curious what brand you've found.
Blue Diamond Almond Breeze from my local Walmart.
Label says it’s got 7g per cup.
Depends on how much you put in your coffee, I guess
Oh yeah, it’s made from Almonds and Coconut.
I drink about 2 mugs a day. I don't use artifical sweetner but do use soy milk or half and half...never had to bolus.
I'm so jealous of all the non-bolus-ers!
During the day, I either take a unit for a cup (black), or do an extended bolus or increased basal rate (130%) for it if I'm just sipping.
However, in the morning... I take two units for a cup. I didn't take any additional insulin yesterday with my coffee because I was 69. I ended up at 230. Go figure.
I drink about 2 cups of black coffee every workday. Coffee has no effect on my BG and I do not bolus.
Yeah for me too! I find if I drink a big class of water at the same time it counteracts the effect of the coffee and I don't need insulin. I'm also on symlin and taking that will counter act the bg rise too.
Wow. I can't really say that I bolus for coffee. I always figure I need either less than .5 unit or at least a post coffee bolus. But with this, I wonder how long it takes for that coffee to kick-in?
I usually take 2 units to cover the 3 cups I drink at breakfast. My IC:R is one to 8 and I take my coffe with 1/2 packet of Splenda and 2tbsp of half and half. In reality there aren't many carbs in it but it tends to spike me if I don't correct for it.
A 12 oz cup of coffee usually requires me to bolus 0.3 units. That seems to cover my caffeine spike.
I wonder how much of my "dawn phenomenon" is "coffee phenomenon"?!
It comes and goes for me. Usually no bolus is required. Then it will change for a while and I will take 1 unit. Then it changes again.....That is the picture for me.
I used to drink two mugs each morning, but since I retired, I have been drinking iced tea in the morning.
If I just have coffee in the morning I bolus some insulin, but if I have a meal with it I do not add any for the coffee. I think the caffeine just triggers a hormone dump early in the morning. If I drink coffee at work in the afternoon it has no impact on my BG.
I drink coffee with whole or 2% milk and bolus for the milk, but nothing extra for the coffee. I used to drink it with cream and when I did, I didn't bolus anything. I'd like to work my way down to using almond milk in my coffee.
I switched a few months ago, Jen. It took a little bit of adjustment, but now I'm used to it and it's nice having something without carbs to worry about! (I was also glad when I heard milk is going to rise drastically in price in the next few months!)
