What a week. I was diagnosed in January. I was the one that posted about not being able to stop crying. About the carnival ride that wouldn’t stop going around and around. It’s been 4 months. 4 months of breaking up with carbs. Losing weight. Taking metformin. I was afraid and canceled a vision appointment in March, after an inconclusive one in February. Canceled it again in April. Finally my mom, drove me to one this week. Other than an enormous change in my prescription from the high sugars prior to diagnosis, it was all correctable by new lenses. I was sooooooo relieved. Next Tuesday is my 3(almost 4) month check up. I had blood drawn this am for my second A1C. My first was at diagnosis in January. That was 10.5. I’ve lived with that number hanging over me since. My doctor said not to expect much more than 8 at my first 3 month check. That he hoped for under 7 eventually. My insurance company sent me literature that said they are content with 7 or under. My eye specialist said he doesn’t want over 6.5 for the health of my eyes. (he also gave me a huge lecture and told me his father died of diabetes and also lost a foot prior to that, sigh). I wasn’t that happy with my numbers the last months but I also worry everything to death. My morning fastings are still 120-130 ish. I don’t like that. Other times of the day can be 80-90ish. I had no idea. Doctor said expecting lower than 8 was nothing he would expect. Insurance co, 7, eye doctor 6.5. ACK! I couldn’t wait til Tuesday worrying the whole time. I got out of work at 5 after the dr’s office is closed, the lab was closed. I called the lab, and the worker on staff said if I came, I could get a print out. I collected my husband, drove there. The lab worker let us into the lab, and had me sign and another worker went by and gave me a thumbs up. My husband opened the results, read them, and said Honey? It’s a 5.9. I swear, I almost fainted. Can I just say, I’m looking forward to my check up with the doctor on Tuesday? Who’s never seen anyone starting at a 10.5, go below 8 at their first check up. He’s never read this site I can tell! I could not have done that, without this place. Thank you to all of you.
Yay, you!!! :))))))) You’re doing awesome, and don’t worry about those other people… You worry about you, and know that although those people are concerned and mean well, you are your own person and you are in control of you! I too, got down to a 5.5 from a 10.5 in 3 months! Amazing, huh?
It CAN be done… I now have lowered my morning numbers, and boy was that a challenge, too… and I know you’ll figure it out.
Great news!!! Keep it up!
Nice Job!! Like you when I was diagnosed 2 yrs ago with my first A1C at 13.5 and since have been between 5.7-6.1. So congrats to you for accomplishing this and for giving hope to others that you can live with this, manage it and continue your life…Way to go!!
Great job. Keep up the good work. The morning numbers will come down, just give them time and learning more about how to control your numbers. Sounds like you are definitely on the road to controlling this disease that we face.
WOW! That’s Amazing. You’re Amazing. What a drop and you’ve had a lot to deal with. That’s a Terrific number. Congratulations and keep up the Good work.
Congratulations, you deserved that number! It was your hard work that gave your that satisfaction and I am doing the happy dance for you!!
Now be careful to keep up the good habits you have begun and don’t worry quite so much.
Good Job!
Wow! Be very proud of yourself! GREAT job!
Oh great job M.Kay! For as hard as you worked…you deserve it. Congratulations and keep up the good work!
Wow that is awesome! I am in a similar boat as you. I was just diagnosed a little over two months ago. It will be two months on Metaformin and a low carbs diet in a few days. Although unlike you I didn’t need to lose weight - I am already a pick. But I go back in June for a second blood draw and A1C check. I had moved so I have now switched doctors and I showed my new one my numbers for the first few weeks (mostly in between 70 and 100 all the time) and he said that he would not be surprised if my 9.2 would drop down to 6 - if I keep the number the way they are - which I have been, I have had a few over a 100 - but nothing above 120.
I worry everything to death too - I should change my middle name or something. I am supposed to go to the eye doctor as well as the doctor said all new D diagnosis should go - although my vision has been fine as far as I can tell (it is probably like 20/30 or something but it has always been like that since I had my eyes lasered about 7 yrs ago). But yes, I still have to go, get them checked. If I had insurance, I would have gone already but I am tryin to find a cheap place where I can get it low cost - I have to figure that out for the blood test too!
Yeah, what do those doctors know right? You know, the first doctor that diagnosed me was kind of like yours - seemed very pessimistic that anyone could do well on diabetes and have their A1C drop low quickly. I think that they must have a lot of patient who don’t follow the diet and thereby they don’t see alot of good drop in A1C so they assume that everyone will be like that.
I am very happy for you because I am hoping for the same thing for me in a month! Now I know it can be done! Congrats!
Now THAT is taking CONTROL!! You ROCK!!
Terry
WOW! I’d say you should be giving the advice. Great job.
M, this is wonderful news!
Remember that the docs/educators/providers have what we all do – information in the form of guidelines. It’s up to us what we do with it.
Rock on, sister!
thats beautiful! congratulations!
umm…your eye doc is an ■■■. you don’t do that to people! my eye doctor ALWAYS compares me with another of his patients. i fall way short, and feel like crap.
Congrats M Kay- That is terrific. Most doctors are very jaded about patients really trying to lower their A1c and their carbs. That is why their expectations for you were so off. Most new diabetics do not belong to TuD and communicate with all the people you have communicated with for the past 2 months. You have gotten the encouragement and support that we give everybody that wants to succeed with their D. Good for you !!!
