For the first time in my life, maybe, I have the flu. I did end up getting my flu shot in October. And it didn’t prevent me from getting the flu!!! Kind of ironic since before diabetes I never had flu shots.
I went to the same clinic where I got the shot because they are so much better and more professional/thorough than my gp’s office. They diagnosed it with a nasal swab. I thought I might have wooping cough because the cough is so bad, but no, it’s the flu. Apparently the cough can last for weeks after the flu too.
So far my bg has been ok but it has spiked a couple of times with food and I needed much larger than usually corrections and temp rates to get it down.
They said to stay at home, in bed until the fever is gone which I plan to do since not knowing this was flu I had been attempting to do things in spite of being so exhausted.
What did you do to get yourself through the flu? I’m doing the usual, fluids, pain killers, cough suppressant etc. I started a z pack because I have bronchitis already- the doc I saw said I’m at risk for another illness directly after due to the flu’s affect on the immune system. I have been taking lysine and another homeopathic flu/cold remedy also but I ran out of that at some point. I’m starting lysine again.
Well, at least now I know why I have just wanted to lay in bed and rest/sleep for the most part.
So sorry you’re under the weather. Below is a link for “diabetes and sick days”. I know, I know, it goes against our traditional therapy to drink regular soda and Jell-O, but it works. You’re gonna be high…that’s a given. Just drink lots of water, rest, and test, test, test.
Thanks Trudy and everyone My fever is gone since last night so I think I’m on the mend. I still feel very tired and I definitely have bronchitis- I’m just wondering if I should do the second round of antibiotics they gave me- I had started one at home when my fever went high and it helped. I think I will wait and see if this one knocks it out. Sarah, I could never drink normal juice/soda- I would be in the 300’s I make my own soda now with stevia but I haven’t done it for ages. I prefer jam and berries etc. I just kept eating my normal diet and had tons of water, teas, and consome and my homemade jello with lemon and stevia. Fortunately my stomach wasn’t affected much. I’m so zonked out of my mind though and I think it’s partly from the meds as well as the flu. I actually went to teach twice because it was the last class with presentations and I didn’t want to cancel, not realizing I had the flu- I hope I didn’t infect anyone. I stayed far away from everyone though and they’re all young so it should be ok. So far my bg has been pretty good, knock on wood!! I had another spike today but I think it was due to not eating when I got up and under bolusing and maybe a little flu bounciness too.
Another thing I’ve figured out is that vicks vapo rub is great for your nasal/chest symptoms if you can’t use cough drops and you don’t want to use a decongestant as well as Dr. Katz’s Therabreath mouth wetting lozenges- I used them as cough drops- they have some sorbitol but they didn’t spike me and only caused minimal gas. Hopefully one day I will make my own with stevia or no sweetener if possible.
