I haven't been here for a while

It’s been over 2 months since I’ve been on TU. Not much has happened diabetes wise. I have been staying with my grandparents in California. I’ll be returning to Japan next week. I had hoped to get started on an insulin pump while I was here but it didn’t happen. The doctor didn’t think I was ready because he didn’t think I was dedicated enough to go on the pump and leave the country in a few weeks. He was right, I was worried about that myself. So I will be staying on MDI with Humalog and Lantus. That’s fine with me, I don’t mind the shots and frequent correction doses.

I miss my parents and boyfriend in Japan and will be glad to go back. They have me registered for school and I’m looking forward to another year at my school. I don’t think I’ll be able to stay in Japan until I graduate as my parents might get relocated next summer. I’ll enjoy while it lasts.

I hope some of my old acquaintances here on TU see this post as I would like to hear from them. Good bye for a while. I’ll try and post again before I leave.

It is great to see you again. I just looked back. Do you know it was only this last January that you were diagnosed. It sounds like things are actually going very well. I would urge you to work to taking good care of yourself. It can be hard over time to keep on top of things and we sometimes get distracted in our lives. Do keep in touch and let us know how things are going. And if you ever need to just talk we will all be here.

Glad to hear from you Brian. The first 3 months of my diabetes trip seems like a bad dream. I’m not sure it was caused by diabetes but I thought I would have kidney failure and need to go on dialysis. Thankfully the lingering kidney infection was finally cured. 2 weeks ago I had a complete physical, with emphasis on diabetes and my kidneys. I am in good health and diabetes is in good control. My newest A1c is 6.8 and all my tests were within normal range, that made me so happy I celebrated with a cone at Baskin‑Robbins. I’ve been sticking to a healthy, lower carb diet. I find out it was easier for me to keep my BG under good control that way. I try to eat a variety of foods so I don’t get bored with my diet. I’ve learned to judge the carbs in things and rarely need help unless it’s a new food. For a long time I didn’t believe you and others that said this would become routine but you was right.

Gotta go, my aunt is driving me up to the Yokoji-Zen Mountain Center. In case you forgot I’m a Buddhist.

Nice to hear from you again and it’s wonderful to hear that you’re doing well. Getting your A1c down under 7 within a few months of diagnosis is an achievement and you should be proud of yourself. Your Buddhism will probably serve you well with respect to your diabetes. We all get too attached to our habits, routines, techniques and illness. Please stay in touch both while you’re in the U.S. and when you return to Japan.

Take care,

Maurie
