I just read about a new Breathalyzer for us?!

I have been around for a long time and have heard other encouraging "D" news in the past, what do you all think about this one?

People with diabetes have to prick their fingers multiple times a day to monitor their blood sugar levels, but researchers report that someday patients may be able to do that simply by checking their breath.

A hand-held device would measure levels of the chemical acetone in someone’s breath. Acetone levels rise when blood sugar levels rise, and acetone is responsible for the sweet, fruity smell on the breath of people with diabetes who have high blood sugar levels.

More on my site here.

Would love to see and use it. I bet it's accuracy is an issue though, as that usually is a problem with non-invasive devices...

Sorry, but this is wishful thinking

Wow! I'm game! Where do I sign up? It's as big as a book now but PROGRESS!!!!

Nice no more glucose meters and supplies! Well....I did a little research on this because obviously something like this will not get past the FDA. This is how they will require a drug prescription....there will be a small filter that needs replacing every 8 hours and will accomodate up to 10 glucose readings. Boy every time something good comes along the goverment can just suck the life right out of it.

I agree. I do a finger stick to confirm the cgm. I cannot imagine making bg decisions based off of breath. I mean, even the allowable margin of error within the test strips is atrocious. It seems that while this would be less-invasive, it may not result in better control. BUT, for all that Debby-Downer talk, I am glad that they are continuing to try new stuff to help us out.

Side note: what would my boss say if they watch me testing by breath at work? ;)

I am told that dogs can be trained to identify highs and lows based on the smell of one's breath. Would love to train my yellow mutt to do that.
