Hi friends how r u??? I was diagnosed as Type-1 diabetic about 3 years back… at that time my weight was 75 Kgs… now my weight is 58 Kgs… I want to gain weight… what should I do now???
Shahid, if your hbA1c is above 7, first strive for sugar control, then you will be able to control your weight too. If you have good control, you add 500 calories to your daily meals, you will need more insulin. It takes a good 3 weeks to get stabile. Strive for sugar control. If after a month you see no increase, and your sugar is in good control, add another 500.
Keep it up until you gain your weight, or explode from eating =)

I am having the exact opposite problem. But with calories under control I am burning fat without running my blood sugars up. I suppose to really know whats up we need to know how many calories you are getting per day, vs your activity. Then where your control is at. If you are on the edge of DKA that can cause weight loss, just like not getting enough calories per day for your activity. Also, hyper thyroid is not out of the question.

Hi Shahid! Sorry to hear about this…
You should be tested for other conditions that might cause weight loss. Two that are often occurring with type 1 diabetes are:
- Graves disease (hyperthyroidism)-- as iroseland mentioned
- Celiac (intolerance for gluten)
You should get checked as soon as possible! Let us know how you are doing!!!
Hi Shahid,
I have a problem trying to gain weight because of being on a low carb diet. Am Type 1 also. My doctor told me to add protein & to add it slowly to see the effect on BG. Being on a very low carb diet 50-57% of the protein will turn to glucose (though slower than carbs), as Emily mentioned. But this is in the absence of sufficient carbs.
Celiac Disease is fairly common in diabetics as are thyroid problems.
I’m with Kristin on this one, go get checked out for other autoimmune issues. Another one that type I’s are prone to is Myositis which can make you lose a ton of weight! I thought I was losing weight from eating better and portion control until I got this diagnosis. I went to the nutritionist after keeping a food log for a month and she agreed I would have lost weight with what I was eating but not as much as I did lose. The calories didn’t add up for the loss I was having. Now that my myositis is under control, my weight loss is normal for the calories I am taking in.
Assuming you have no other medical conditions, try weightlifting, eating lots of lean protein, and make sure you have a net daily calorie surplus of at least 350, but I wouldn’t go over 500.
I’m also assuming you want to gain the weight in your muscles and not in your gut.
I’ll GIVE IT TO YOU!!! I don’t know the metric system, but I assume you think you’re too low???

I wish I had that problem. Since I was diagnosed with type 1, I think my metabolism slowed. I was diagnosed about 4 years ago and have gained about 15 pounds. What is your diet like?
Hi Ashley how r u? Well I m from an asian country so I take desi food… and I use to eat as much as I can but still I m loosing weight… Before diabeties I was a well known body builder of my area… whats ur diet plan?
