What pain reliever or anti inflammatory is ok for type 1 diabetics to take?
You need to ask your own doctor this question. T1 doesn’t really matter, what other meds and conditions you may have may matter. Also what works for you matters.
I take Ibuprofen (Irfen) very rarely and read the package insert. As usual, they warn about every possible thing that could go wrong, and mention Diabetes as well, but more as a cardiovascular condition than a metabolic one. so i assumed they are more afraid of strokes and other stuff than blood sugar excursions.
I am going to talk with my doctor about this the next time i see him, but do not expect anything from him. I would also suggest to you that you talk to your doctor about this, as long term use of painkillers should be supervised and self medication is not really good in any case.
Never had any problems with ibuprofen in particular. But when it comes to anti-inflammatory/joint-pain treatments in general I have this to say: Beware the cortisone!!! Orthopedists often reach for this solution when OTC pills haven’t worked but surgery doesn’t seem warranted, and may not be aware that it is a major red flag for T1s (don’t know about T2s). It will blow your BG through the roof and it will stay up there for a while. It was about three weeks before I got decent control back, the one time I had it—and never again since then.
Remember if you are on a Dexcom (I seem to remember you being new to Dexcom?) that acetaminophen (Tylenol) and products containing it will mess up your Dexcom readings.
Correct I am on a Dexcom.
Indeed, any steroid (except topical ones) will do that. Watch out.
I agree with Dr BB. Got a shot for plantar faciatis. Doc said it might raise sugars for a day or two. Ten days later they were just starting to come down. Don’t let them tell you different.
Got Cortisone shot for shoulder in November, BG would stay between 200-300 for about 7 days, by fifth day I pretty much stopped eating and that got down below 200… Lost a few LBS and it finally settled down at end of week. Shoulder still hurt like hell though
Meant to add I am now taking a prescription AI twice a day with no problems at all affecting the BG. (Name is too long and unpronounceable without it in front of me).
