I'm just starting out on Victoza, and confused!

First off let me state that I am a 55 y/o white male, I work second shift from 3pm to 11pm, and have been on meds for Type 2 for several years, none of which have done much good. I'll be honest and state that I usually didn't watch what I ate and exercise was limited to walking about half a mile at night on the tred mill when I get home. The meds I was on were Januvia, Metformin, and Amaryl. My BG levels in the mornings were somewhere between 165-250 and durning the run of the day somewhere around 175+ my last A1C was 8.9 Two weeks ago my Dr took me off the Januvia, and started me on Victoza 1.2 I started watching what I ate, took my Victoza in the mornings around 11am along with Metformin, at night I took only the Metformin and Amaryl. In a weeks time my mornings fasting levels were down to the mid 90's, around 4pm I was around 110-115 and at night before bed I was between 115-128, never at anytime durning the first week was I ever over 128. For the first time since I have been a diabetic, my numbers were close to being perfect. I lost 7lbs, and was in heaven.I did get a little nausea, but nothing to be too worried about. I went back to see my Dr after a week as she had asked, and she was tickled as well, and said that she wanted to take me off the night time Amaryl. After three days my levels were back up, my morning fasting levels were 130-140 my afternoon levels were 160-190 and my night time levels were 165+ I made a call to the Dr office to voice my consern and she told me to up my Vicotza dose to 1.8, but not to restart the Amaryl. After 4 days my levels have still incresed to where my morning fasting levels are now in the 170's my afternoon levels are 190's and my night levels are 190-200+ I have continued to loose weight, having lost a total of 11 pounds in 2 weeks. I feel great, a little depressed, but physcially ok. I am totally confused and going to call her in the morning to see if she can lower my Victoza back to 1.2 and keep me on the Metformin and restart the Amaryl. That seems to be the magic that keeps me in check....keep your fingers crossed.

Diabetes is such a complicated disease and as is said so often, we are all different. So it's no surprising that prescribing medicines and amounts varies from person to person. The best is figure out what works and stick to it till it doesn't work any more. Your numbers on the best combination are excellent and a vast improvement from what they have been.

Well talked to the Dr office yesterday, they said give it a day or two that it may take up to a week to start working. Maybe he's right, last night my BG was 135, but up again this morningat 930am before breakfast to 167. Ate a normal breakfast (well normal for me), eggs, and a slice of toast (which BTW I have found that if I buy a loaf of un sliced bread and slice it myself very thin I eat less and am still happy). My BG reading at 330pm today was136. I have been told I am "carb starvin" myself as I usually eat lower than 20 total carbs a day. Any thoughts??

Well I called the Dr office on Thursday and the Quack was gone and his PA put me back on Amaryl, but reduced my dose to 2mg, kept me on the 1.8 Victoza, and over night my levels went right back down to where they were when I started, between 110-119 in the mornings. Thank goodness!!!!! My nausea has stopped and I feel like living again.
