Infusion sets and swimming

My 8 year old son got his Animas Ping pump a week ago and so far we are very happy! I am wondering if the infusion sets really stick during swimming and being soaked in the water for a couple of hours. I notice in the bath they get a little crumply around the edges although they seem to be stuck well when we change the set. Currently the only extra thing we are using is the IV prep to apply the sets, do we need something more sticky?

We sometimes use iv300 transparent dressing by smith-nephew
on our daughter when she needs extra. But you may not need anything
extra, depending on how often he swims. Hope this helps.

Are you planning to swim with the pump on? Good luck. I’ve had two Animas pumps leak water into the battery chamber and die on me (my son that is) while on vacation. Fortunately we had back up. I wouldn’t trust another Animas pump in the water ever. The sets stayed on fine, though.

Well, we don’t do anything different. Sometimes it falls off, sometimes it doesn’t. We even stopped using the ivprep and it still stays on. We’re using the inset and have had more luck with that than the silhouette which I really had to apply ivprep to. If I know he’s going to be all day at the beach then all I apply the iv3000.

Sorry I don’t have any info about the swimming, but I am interested to hear how you guys like the pump. My 12 year old son is getting an Animas Ping pump. Should be here in a couple of weeks. How does he like it? Has it been hard for him to get used to wearing it all the time? Thanks

I’ve been wearing the Ping for a few months now and had the 2020 before. I spend a fair amount of time in and around the water and usually have no problems with my infusion sets coming out. Only if I have them placed in an area that gets rubbed vigorously by clothing (waistline, hip, etc) do I have an issue but I usually plan ahead and place my Inset II in swim/paddle friendly places.
As for Animas pumps leaking?! Never had an issue and I’m quite hard on my pump. Keep in mind that when replacing a battery you are to turn it an extra turn after the yellow ring has disappeared so that it seals it water tight, if you do not do this than water may leak in as the seal has not formed.

I had just replaced the battery cap (as they suggest to do, every 3-4 months) when our pump leaked last year. It was nice and tight too. My son’s endo at Stanford (Dr. Buckingham) said that he personally didn’t put a lot of trust in waterproof pumps. He says they develop small microscopic leaks in the plastic. Chance it if you want to, but make sure you always get a loaner if you go on vacation. Animas has been awesome about that.

We debated on the Medtronic, the Omnipod and the Ping. We ultimately decided on the Ping because of the brilliant screen and the functions from the remote. So far we love it, I use the remote for almost all of his boluses. I was concerned about pain with the infusion sets being applied and he says he barely even feels it. He really hasn’t complained about wearing it all the time, we clip it to his pajama bottoms at night and he rolls around on it, so far it hasn’t hurt a thing, the tubing has never kinked or anything. During the day we put it in a Spibelt, I can’t sing its praises enough! The first time he wore the pump without the belt it poked him and there was a big lump under his shirt, but with the belt it smooths out the lump and you can’t even see it. The belt also keeps it protected and steady in place, the thing I most like about it is it holds it in place when he uses the restroom and to change clothes. You can order from spibelt.com he is big for his age and wears the adult size so measure waist before ordering. He uses quite a bit less insulin on the pump so watch carefully for lows the first few days. I hope you like your pump as much as we do!

My daughter’s already gone swimming with hers with no problem. We didn’t do anything different. She also like to take long baths occasionally. No problems there either. We do plan to take it off at the lake because if that sucker gets lose, it’s gone for sure.

when did you make the switch from the silhouette to the inset? My 41/2 yr old son uses the silhouettes and we have a big problem with swimming, or any water, or even heavey playtime that leaves him sweaty, any of them seem to make his site want to fall of.

We don’t use IV prep anymore but we use Skin Tac instead. THis works well. We use it on the site before insertion, and then wipe the edges with it once it is placed.

We were having problems with my sons infusion set wanting to come loose around the edges after bathing and the Medtronics rep at the Dr.'s office gave me some Skin tac to try. It works so much better. We only use that while applying his infusion sets. The IV Prep just didn’t have enough stickiness to it. As far as swimming, we used Tegaderm when we went to Blizzard Beach at Disney World and I wasn’t pleased with it. After about an 30 minutes of swimming it was coming off and didn’t stay over the infusion set. I gave up and took it the rest of the way off and let him go ahead and swim with just the plastic cap on it that comes with his Quickset infusion set and it never even started to come lose. The Skin tac really works for us and we haven’t had any trouble swimming without covering his set. I do have some IV 3000 that I’m going to try out this summer.

Here’s the absolute, no fail solution we came up with for a vacation at the beach in NC last summer…dealing with a como of ocean water, high humidity, and chloriney swimming pool.

Wipe the area with skin-tack, the insert set, then cover the whole thing with an IV cover.

never failed!

Ch

ditto!!!

you may have to cut a small hole out of the center so that you can still disconnect, and just cover the sticky with the dressing

swim on!

Skin Tac? what and where can i get this? we usually just use IV prep and personally, i think they suck!

Just an update, he went swimming for the first time with pump off infusion set in. I used iv prep as usual then covered with tegaderm. The tegaderm was useless it came right off in the water. The set stayed in but came loose later when it dried out. The next day we used a large bandage to cover infusion set, it wasn’t a waterproof bandage but worked pretty well. I think a large waterproof bandage over set may be the way to go! Was wondering if anyone has tried a shortie wetsuit with a pump?

Where do you get skin tac ?

Last summer we had the Cleo and had lots of problems. We now use Animas Inset and haven’t had any problems.

We get skin tac at our Pharmacy…just ask for it

I think it’s the talbot group site (just do a search) will send a few samples upon request. I just ordered some from Animas $10.00 box of 50.
