I have not been sleeping well this week, by bsugars are 6.9 this morning, which is high for me. I am shaky and bothered as if I am in a low. I have not slept well for years, but have been successful with hot milk and honey with some carbohydrate at bedtime or a glass of wine, both of these simple medications are now deemed unwise and I am left with no props to help me get through the night. I have been taking Valerian as I don’t want to go on sleeping pills. Does anyone have a similar problem and what have you done?
What I do, when I get insomnia, is wake up and stay awake for a while and play with my ipod and don’t worry about it. It’s only insomnia if it bothers you! I pretty much never sleep through the entire night, but rather am up for about an hour at some point. If I’m really really hungry I’ll go get some cheese. Why do you think your snacks before bed are unwise? I always eat something before bed.
The dietitian said I should have a cup of half water and half skim milk before bed, no honey. A cup of milk counts as a meal and honey is a sugar, of course. So biscuits and cheese count as too much food when I am trying to lose weight. My liver readings are a bit off since I had cancer several years ago and for years I have been called an alcoholic when I only ever drink a bottle of wine a week, if that! I do get up and play solitaire on my computer, but lately I have not been getting back to sleep, I have been still awake at 2am drift off to sleep then and wake at 5am. Just not enough sleep.
I haven’t slept well since being diagnosed. Even with good readings, I just don’t sleep like I used to.
Valerian helped me some. I take magnesium capsules before bed. Since milk helped you before, calcium with magnesium should do the same thing. I also use a white noise machine. It has white noise, ocean waves, wind, rain sounds. Very relaxing.
Milk thistle is great for your liver.
thanks Gerri. Will try magnesium capsules.
Hope it helps! Most people need more magnesium if they eat a lot of milk products. The only downside is that much too can give you slight diarrhea, but I’ve never had that happen.
I have to ask…what is Valerian?
If I don’t sleep well at night I will usually wake up high…and it is not because I’ve been grazing.
Valerian is an herb used for sleep & relaxation. Comes in capsules & tincture. You can purchase it most anywhere.
It’s great, isn’t it! Does something to the brain waves. I got the white noise machine for my husband because has tinnitus & white noise is supposed to equalize the buzzing in his ears.
Sure there are better ones, but I got mine at TJ Maxx for less than $20.
Yes, Duck, that is how I am, don’t want to keep taking sleeping pills, besides the mild ones I was given leave me awake at 2am and nowhere to go! I am going back to having a small glass of wine in the evening, it didn’t seem to affect by BG and it certainly helped me sleep.
there’s a wonderful tea called “Calm” by Tazo, don’t know if you can get it, but it has a lot of chamomile in it.
I’ll look for that tea, Marie. I have one called Hops Slumber, but it does not work for me.
I am glad I bought this subject up, I have so many solutions to try now. Thanks John for your tip on Benadryl.
