Have a question about insulin. I’m wondering why, you have to throw it away after 28 days??
I myself, use insulin after 28 days. I haven’t had any problems. Also check online as I have seen Lantus for 85.00.
this is $85 with shipping - http://www.northwestpharmacy.com/ProductSearch.aspx?mid=d75b4b8e40ff472593cba233e45337b9&s=lantus&DrugID=71251
still not cheap, but $100 less than you were going to pay…
do not throw it away. insulin is incredibly robust and the idea that it loses potency after 28 days – or even 40 days – is absurd. i don’t know where this came from, but in 51 years of using insulin i have never had one drop go bad. (and that includes carrying it uncooled in iraq and other hot places.) it’s time to put this urban myth to rest.
I also use it longer than the 28 days. If it didn’t work after 28 days then I wouldn’t use it. But it does work. Mind you, I usually keep it in the fridge unless I’m on the go.
Of all the insulin’s Lantus is perhaps the most fragile. It is subject to degradation, primarily through temperature and light degradation, but also can be contaminated. The supplier of Lantus essentially guarantees the potency of the Lantus when stored and use properly. It is not that the Lantus won’t last longer, but it can and will go bad and that it has been tested so that with great confidence it can be assured to be good for 28 days at the conditions listed in the storage and handling section. But it will be good for longer if you take more care in storage and handling and “you are lucky.” You can extend the life of Lantus by keeping it stored in the fridge at proper temperatures after opening and keep it out of light. But be diligent, if your fasting levels go high, you know what is wrong.
Yes - I can agree with bsc on Lantus going “bad” after 28 days if not kept in the fridge. Other than that - I keep on using my insulin bottle until I’ve sucked the bottle dry!
I, too, use to the last drop - both Lantus and Humalog. I keep the vials both together in one of their boxes with the lid down in the frig so they’re dark and cold. Two months plus.
I use my insulins ( Lantus & Humalog) until they are empty. I have never had a problem with them not lowering my BS. When I first became D, my endo told me the pharma cos.have to put a date on each vial to satisfy the FDA, but if kept properly, in the 'frig, insulin will last a very long time. They are too expensive to throw out if they still work after 28 days.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I threw away my first vial which was 1/2 full…now I know better. I really appreciate all the information and support that I can use my Lantus past 28 days. I do keep it refrigerated, in it’s pharmacy box with the lid closed. Dank thanks for the northwestpharmacy it’s actual very inexpensive at $74 a vial, excellent buy. Actually it’s the cheapest site on the net. I can’t believe how helpful and forthcoming you guys are and I’m very appreciative of it! XOXOX
