Is the TuDiab forum going to be shut down?

My issue with Reddit T1D is there is often a lot of misinformation, not malicious, but could cause damage. I have not seen that here or at FUD

On Reddit, some subs are more upbeat and helpful than others. On one of the pages, everyone almost seems suicidal. It’s really sad.

I don’t really follow diabetes forums on Reddit, but the level of bad advice that I see there on other channels (eg electrical wiring) is indeed alarming… it doesn’t seem to be the type of platform where people actually build any sort of credibility in order to have their advice taken at face value.. and sometimes that can be problematic or even dangerous

Thanks, Marie. You’ve always been so helpful!

Are you still “Marie20” on the FU forums?

Make sure you do not have anything selected for “Category”. If there is no category filter, it should show everything.

thanks all - I’m going to sign up at the FUD site and see how it goes. I’m so grateful for all the clear and helpful folks here over the years! I’ve learned a lot just reading others’ questions and answers.

Marie, I was referring to eliminating tudiabetes.org and replacing it with beyond type one. I have never been on FU Diabetes.

I wanted to keep it as is, but I wondered who made the changes and why.
I like to form the way it is and with the commentary I have gotten I thought you might know who ordered the change
Marie is you wear a long time member.
Answer if you know the answer.

It’s not going to Reddit. It’s going to beyond type one.. but I don’t know who approved it who ordered it and why it has to be.

There haven’t been any disclosures from the current TuD admins that I know of but there is history with the similar closure of foro.estudiabetes.org. What they did there was to completely remove the “foro…” domain name (try clicking on the link) and remove the original link on estudiabetes.org. However the estudiabetes home page is otherwise not much changed from before the forum was eliminated (IRC in 2020).

It seems reasonable to assume that the intent was, and probably still is, to do the same with tudiabetes.org. estudiabetes.org did not go away, it just lost the link to the (Spanish language) forum.

At this point there does not seem to have been any feedback or response from the current administrators but it might still be possible to have some kind of constructive engagement.

The remaining possibilities seem to amount to:

  1. Linking the current “forum” drop-down to forum.fudiabetes.org; easy but seems unlikely that they would want to provide an alternative to their own offering.
  2. Providing an explanatory paragraph with links both to the archive.org archive (which @mohe0001 seems to have managed to initiate) and to forum.fudiabetes.org.
  3. Adding an explanatory note somewhere on FUD keyworded in such a way that Google will find it.
  4. Persuading someone to set up and pay for a new discourse server and persuading BeyondTypeX to transfer the current archive over to the new server. Lots of money and potential legal issues there.

At present to find something on TuD or FUD with Google (and probably other engines) it is possible to use:

something about diabetes site:forum.tudiabetes.org

Or similar for forum.fudiabetes.org I tried “Omnipod 5 site:forum.***.org” with estudiabetes, tudiabetes and fudiabetes. I got lots of matches for TuD and FUD but none for EsTuD and the same result if I dropped the “5”.

The backstop here is (3). That’s already happening now because of the discussion topics on FUD about the TuD shutdown; Google will pick those up.

I recommend anyone who starts with a new account on FUD to announce yourself with a reference to your TuD user name. They’re often different and it will help people link up. I’m jbowler on FUD and, IRC, I used to be here, but that was a while back; I’m John_Bowler (here) now.

Marie , it seems people are not objecting and they’re moving over to FuD. I have still yet to get an answer as to why this is happening who funds the two diabetes for him and what happened to the funding? Can you answer that Marie?

@Andrea8 Not a clue! Sorry!

This is who currently funds the site: Who We Are | Beyond Type 1

“Beyond Type 1 is a global nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of those impacted by diabetes. Co-founded in 2015 by Nick Jonas, Juliet De Baubigny, and fellow diabetes change-makers, Beyond Type 1 serves the largest digital audience of any diabetes nonprofit worldwide. From awareness and prevention to diagnosis and daily management, we’re here for every step of the journey.”

I imagine that they just ran out of funding.

Ways to contact Beyond Type 1 can be found at
https://forum.tudiabetes.org/about
https://beyondtype1.org/contact-us/

Their email notifying us of the change said to go to beyond type one instead of Tu diabetes. So they don’t longer want to fund to Diabetes if they’re funding beyond Type 1

They didn’t run out of funding. As of December 31, 2023 (according to their Form 990) they had net assets of $28,843,414. Their revenues that year were $6,148,612 and they had “net income” of $317,653. It’s true that they lost $2,383,731 in 2022 but they have net assets in excess of four times their total annual expenses.

It looks like they decided that we’re too small to spend time on rather than too expensive to maintain.

Nice guys!

Anybody noticed this option? I’m afraid to try it because the download will be enormous. @LWithrow

Oh, it’s OK. It does this…

Lol. I did the same: set up an account on both FUdiabetes and Beyond T1D. Almost immediately after creating my Beyond T1 profile, I got a PM à la fake FB profile ilk: “You are so interesting and we seem to have so much in common…” :face_vomiting: I will miss TuDiabetes!!
