Is there a good tasting low carb cereal?

i ike kashi cereal and oatmeal.

anybody know what the “other carbohydrates” are in Fiber one? Kind of made me not want to try it… listed fiber and sugar, but other? hmmm

they are called wheat berries, but they are the whole grain wheat. you can get them through bob’s red mill, or in the bulk section of the grocery store. i use either soft white wheat (which when ground becomes pastry flour) or hard white wheat (which becomes bread flour)

at any rate, either berry makes a delicious cold cereal.

Save your money on the Glucerna. I got some of their shakes & cereal free from my CDE and it was vile.

Corn Starch among others and any other ingredient that is less than 1g of carbs that they don’t have to claim.

I made it right away and love it!!! It is so good, and doesnt’ affect my blood sugar which makes it even better. Thanks so much for sharing this.

Hi Carol & Donna,

Am so happy you both liked it!

what’s “low-carb” to you guys? for me… i still want to eat cereal that has flavor… lol. so… i eat Banana Cheerios. OMG!!! they are to die for!!! they taste super sweet!! but… yeah. my body loves them… and doesn’t do crazy stuff. For 1 cup… it’s like… 22 or 23 carbs. which isn’t bad for how awesome it tastes. and, the Multi Grain Cheerios are the same, as well as the Yogurt cheerios.

I agree with you about the Cheerios. I really miss Cheerios! I might try them and then test to see what they do to me.

Hi Patricia,
Not sure if you can get them over in the States, but here in the UK I have an Oatabix every morning which is the oat equivalent of a Weetabix. Oats are low GI so one Oatabix with a little bit of milk sets me up till lunchtime! Definitely worth a go.

I’ve never seen that in any groceries around here. I looked it up and can’t find where it is sold at any retailers in my area, in fact I only found where you can order it online. Thanks for the tip!

Hmmmm… it looks like Oatibix might be coming over the pond to you at some point as I’ve just read this http://www.weetabixusa.com/weetablog.php. Looks like it should be available at “select stores on the U.S. East Coast in early 2009.”. I guess they’re waiting to see how well it sells in these stores!

This looks awesome. I am going to try this today.

I was excited to hear about this cereal, but when I read the label, it has THREE “sugars” in it! [Sugar, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Sucralose] I’m looking for foods for my “pre-diabetic” husband, and this seems so counter-intuitive. Is it the “lo-carb” attributes that makes up for all the sugar? [Can you tell I’m a bit of a newbie? ] I’d love to hear others on this topic. Thanks!
Sue

While it does have three sugars in it, you have to keep everything in context. It is really about carbs, and 3/4 cup of the Special K protein plus only has 14g and 5g fiber, compared to more typically 30-40g in many cereals. Low carb is as much about reducing the starch sources of carbs as it is about reducing sugar. You can probably find many “sugar-free” cereals that end up being higher in carbs. So read the labels and look for the amounts of carbs.

ps. I also avoid high fructose corn syrup when I can, but there is a difference between mostly eliminated and total avoidance.

+1 for Gerri’s Low Carb Cooking Co. Its delicious!

Thank you, “bsc,” that helps!!

Glad it was helpful and don’t forget the Northern Va Diabetes Support Group meets tomorrow night at 7pm. I’m bringing my low carb peanut butter almond cookies to die for. Our speaker is going to talk about exercise. See the posting in VA Diabetics, and be there or I’ll be forced to eat all the cookies.

Fibre One cereal has the highest content of fibre.

I’ve tried every low carb, healthy and “diabetic” cold cereal I could fine. They all spiked me and sadly I gave up.I’m going to avoid reading back through this thread because I’m sure somebody suggested something that I will want to look for only to find it doesn’t work either.

Zoe check out Gerri’s Flax Seed And Nut Granola earlier in the thread. No grain, it shouldn’t spike you. The only trouble I’m going to have is finding unsweetened almond milk. I live in a rural area and have only been able to find the sweetened variety and I’m sure it would spike me.
