Jardiance

I have been on Jardiance for 7 months. I developed a yeast infection. I was treated. I talked with the pharmacist and she said continue on the medication.as this is a side effect, not an allergic reaction. If it does come back, reduce dose to 10 mg.m anyone else have issues with this side effect? Nancy50

I haven’t used Jardiance but another SGLT2 inhibitor, Farxiga. These drugs work by lowering the glucose threshold of the kindeys so that excess glucose is secreted in the urine. The pluses besides lowering BG levels is renal and cardiac protection. We with diabetes are at increased risk for kidney failure and heart problems.

The negative is that sweet urine can encourage the growth of yeast and bacteria.

You might take this up with your doctor, maybe an OBGYN or urologist.

I cannot use this drug class because after a year, I had a radical cystectomy because of bladder cancer. I have a conduit made from a piece of my small intestine that the urine passes from the kidneys to a stoma and a bag. The problem is that the small intestine easilly transports glucose into the bloodstream.

With the urine being glucose rich, glucose was going back into my bloodstream. My CGM would see a rise in BG and my pump would up the insulin. This resulted in an unstable glucose levels,

You probably will be able to continue using Jardiance. I will caution you that if you have any kind of general anesthesiato stopp taking it several days before the procedure. It is known to cause euglycemic ketoacidosis. Happened to my son.

What @Luis3 said is correct. If you want more info here’s a doctor talking to a room full of T1D’s about SGLT-2 drugs. https://www.youtube.com/live/Awg-NkABAf8?si=HQDOgjuA6pni0ZDO&t=4398
She mentions barrier creams and bidets as ways to manage the sweet pee. Certainly not by modifying the dose.

Talking about Jardiance I did get some kind of an infection too. However, the issue is that it makes me get up numerous times in the night, which really plays havoc with my sleep. Also, all most any time I move much, have to go and sometimes can barely get to the bathroom in time. Anyone else have issues like this, besides the infection?

Those are all side effects. I have a 4 oz. Drink after supper. Trying to decrease getting up. My infection is gone. Still another week off of Jardiance. I live with getting up. Nancy 50

Polyuria is a function of how SGLT2 inhibitors work when blood glucose levels are high. It might help if your evening meal is very low carbohydrates.

Nancy, I used Jardiance for 4 days and got yeast infection. I got the yeast pills and went away but my doctor said you can’t keep having yeast infections and taking the meds…as they will no longer work in time. I was taking 10mg Jardiance. Had same result with Farixga. My sister is taking Farixga for kidney issues and has had no yeast infections. My theory is that my glucose was so high that both meds caused a lot of sugar to be in urine making me more susceptible to yeast. I had not had a yeast inf for over 35 years and forgot how awful they are.

Nancy, I am type 1 and not well managed. Ask doctor, not pharmacist. I got the yeast inf on 10mg but were you taking more?

If your sister is not diabetic that makes sense as her urine has little or no glucose to feed yeast.

SGLT2 inhibitors are being prescribed to non diabetics to protect kidney and cardiac function.

I am off of it for another week. The pharmacist gave me different information than the written guidelines from the manufacturer. My endos office followed that. We will have to see when I go back on it.nancy50

I have been on Jardiance for a few years and about 8 months ago, I started getting a lot of yeast infections, like at least one a month. I’ve tried barrier creams with no benefit. It also makes me get up a lot at night to pee. I also take insulin.

Are your A1C’s running high? Curious if this is why I had this issue. Nancy 50

No…

It came back. I was in pain, got treated. I called my endocrinologist office and said I am not going back on this medication. I have an A1C next week. See how things are going.nancy50
