Jdrf walk - how much goes towards research?

I signed up for the JDRF walk in October. One of my relatives just asked me how much actually goes towards the cause? Does anyone know?

See page 48 of the JDRF 2010 Annual Report (page 1 of the financial report) at:

http://www.jdrf.org/files/General_Files/Annual_Report_2010/JDRF2010_Annual_Report.pdf

Hey Dean! Thanks for responding. I looked at the report but still can’t figure out how much money goes towards research. I just see the amount raised.

Hi, Abbygirl. Here is the long answer

According to the report, JDRF FUNCTIONAL EXPENSES totaled $191.0M for the year 2010. Of that,

Management and administrative expenses were 34.4M (18%) as follows:

  • Management & General $13.0M (~7%)

  • Fundraising $21.4M (~11%)

Research & Education Programs (mission related or “why we walk” expenses) were $156.6M (82%) as follows:

  • Public Education $38.7M (~20%)

  • Research Support $117.9M (~62%)

Compare this with the American Diabetes Association’s expenses outlined in their 2010 Annual Report (long link, you can find it at the ADA site under the “About Us” tab) where

ADA FUNCTIONAL EXPENSES totaled $194.8M for the year 2010. Of that,

Management and administrative expenses were 53.3M (27%) as follows:

  • Management & General $9.8M (~5%)

  • Fundraising $43.5M (~22%)

Research & Education Programs (mission related expenses) were $141.5M (73%) as follows:

  • Information $54.9M (~28%)

  • Advocacy $44.0M (~23%)

  • Research Support $42.6M (~22%)

I’m providing figures for comparison only and am not trying to convince you to support one organization or the other. Our family has participated in fundraising for both organizations, although the preponderance of our effort goes toward supporting JDRF. Review their mission statements and decide if supporting both, either, or another organization, is right for you.

We’ve had great experiences participating in walks and Matthew looks forward to them each year. Whether it’s a golden sneaker or a red strider, being surrounded by a community dealing with the same challenges and working toward a common goal can be quite rewarding.

Good luck with your walk(s)! Dean
