Just sharing my story

Just wanted to share. I blog about life with diabetes at walkthedragon88.blogspot.com

To make a long story as short as I can I was diagnosed at age 18 - about 10 years ago. I had a hard time accepting it at first but eventually realized I needed insulin to live - spent two days in the hospital with an A1C of “over 18”. Since then my A1Cs have been in the 6-8 range for the majority of the last decade. Also in the last decade I got married and got a Ph.D. In Molecular and Cell biology. About 18 months ago I hit an all-time high A1C of 8.6 and made some changes - essentially I educated myself about a low carb high fat moderate protein diet and also cut waaaay back on drinking alcohol. I also went back to using a Dexcom (at least some of the time). This year I was able to achieve consistent A1Cs in the normal range (low 5s), something I did not think would be possible. I am almost 36 weeks pregnant with our daughter and so far I have had a healthy pregnancy (my only “problem” so far is a breech baby and hopefully that will change). I just wanted to share because I think we all go through different phases in our lives with diabetes. I went through hiding it from everyone, acting like it was no big deal and ignoring it, and more recently to finding the best way to take control and make things happen in my life that I wanted. I want to let anyone who is at a low point know that things can change. 18 months ago was a low point. Today I look forward to welcoming our first child next month (and hopefully more in the future) while continuing to maintain a normal A1C and appreciating all the advances of the last century that allow me to live and live well.
