LANTUS & Weight gain

I have been on lantus since last yearand I am Having the following issues...
1. these last 6 months ..Every, everytime I apply this insulin it gives me a burning sensation no matter how do I apply it ( PEN, Syringe via vial Slowly or fast)IT HURTS... the other this after 45 minute of application I get an internal itching sensation and some mild ras all over my skin.

2. My weight has been increasing by 20 LBS i tought that it was my eating habits but no change I was eating my portions and avoided greasy and harmfull foods but no help.

I Am going to my Dr. in 2 weeks ( Waiting to my health insurance to kick in) I was on NPH never had this problem. I have seen comments about LEVEMIR. is this medication available in the US? thank you all

I had gained on lantus... gained back dka loss. I switched to levemir and lost. was not overweight but didn't want to get there.

I don't know why they put us on lantus when they know it makes us gain weight and it is less stable- doesn't make sense.

Thanks Man, I am even juicing( veg and fruits, ) avoided soft drinks and I am using water Instead. My wife has helped me control portions Also I am a Pacemaker/heart patient i am trying to do the best is not easy but we are on the Fight.

I don't know what type of diabetes you have, your profile shows that you are struggling with blood sugar control. Lantus (and any basal) can cause weight gain if it is covering your meals. This can occur when you are on a basal only regime and when you aren't counting carbs and dosing mealtime insulin accurately. And Lantus can cause stinging. It has a very acidic formulation. But rash you describe suggests an allergic reaction which some people do get. Levemir is an alternative in the US and is the main competitor to Lantus, but that is not really the problem.

The real problem is that you need to get your blood sugar under better control. Your profile says that your A1c is 11.5% which is an average blood sugar of 280 mg/dl. When you get your blood sugar under control, then you can deal with weight. First blood sugar, then weight.

And the whole thing on diet, you can get all kinds of mixed messages. Like many others, I have found that controlling and limiting carbs makes all the difference. Despite the messages from the dieticians, I eat a high fat diet. The carbs make me fat, not the dietary fat. And I don't think juicing is good thing for blood sugar control. It turns complex carbs into simple carbs. It turns carrots into a sugar drink.

ps. I live near you. We have a face to face group that meets regularly. The next meeting is 8/24 at 9am at the Starbucks at Greenbrier shopping center in Chantilly. You should come by.

hi javi. I was on lantus for the first 6 months or so after diagnosis in 2011. that lantus hurt like CRAZY every time I injected! and afterwards, too. I changed to levemir and even though I have to do two shots of basal a day, I am much happier because it is pain free.

my friend was in the usa and she was on it before her pump.
