LCHF diet - accounting for Glucose tabs

Hi all. T1 35 years. This question is mostly aimed at other T1s who follow the LCHF diet… how do you account for any necessary glucose tabs (or other low BS treatment of choice)? Do you just not count those carbs in the day’s ration, since you’re using it to treat low BS, or, if you allot yourself 50 gr. carbs, and you need 2 glucose tabs (at 4 gr apiece) do you then have only a 42 gr carb allotment the rest of the day? Of course, ideally, we could manage so closely as to never need a glucose tab, but I can’t imagine that day :slightly_smiling_face:

Hi @JBrudvig

I don’t take enough of them on a regular basis to have to account for them, but would and will use as many carbs as required to remove myself from dangerous low BGs…

If I needed 15-20 grams of carbs or even more to save my skin, it’s no big deal. I’d rather be alive.

Think of glucose tabs as medication. I don’t count them in my carb count for the day at all. If I can’t head off a low with nuts or peanut butter or something (and I typically do count those, but without guilt if they wreck my macros) I use the tabs and don’t worry about it.

You got that right–do what it takes to stay alive!

That’s kind of what I thought - glucose tabs are treatment, not food!

I never need glucose tabs. I HATE those things! I use Skittles mostly when away from home, a variety of other carbs when home. Tabs make me choke, they are expensive, and they are unnecessary as there are other fast-acting choices.
